beer?

Post by mmpetunia »

i have been gluten and dairy free for going on 2 years now and in that time i have stayed away from beer. i have tried multiple gluten free varieties and drank wine or cider instead. but i miss beer!! i don't drink often at all, maybe one drink every couple of weeks. i'm not so concerned about the gluten content in the beer as i have read its quite minimal after the brewing process...are there any other reasons why having an occasional beer would be a problem?

curious if you've measured your serum zinc at any point or points during this 2 yr time period?

to answer your question, both gluten and alcohol can deplete zinc. but a beer every two weeks shouldn't kill you.

i had a beer a day practically all ski season with no ill effects whatsoever.. other than an apparent propensity for maintaining the tradition now that my knee is busted up :( now that i'm an invalid i shall have to go back to lower-cal bevvies!

i did recently have my zinc level tested and i can't remember the exact number. it was within normal range but i'm sure not optimal. i am supplementing though. just started after the labs were drawn (i wanted a baseline before beginning supplements).

thank you! ah yes, you were deficient. details:

quoting zinc result - serum zinc 75 ug/dL, range 56-134, detection limit = 5

the zinc bit from my reply: http://www.thisisms.com/forum/general-d ... ml#p204841
"zinc is deficient by WHO standards. you want to be much much further up the normal range."

in more detail, when we convert your 75 result that's 11.48 umol/L. WHO 'normal' range is 11.5-18.5 umol/L. you should have been flagged as deficient or at very least, borderline.

your lab's 'normal' range, 56-134, converts to 8.57-20.52 umol/L. everyone who goes to your lab and tests between 8.57-11.5 (56-76) is deficient by WHO standards. regardless, the lab readout reassures them they are inside the printed range, which is erroneously understood as 'normal' or 'okay'.

glad you are supplementing now! go have a beer to celebrate ;)

Alcohol exacerbates MS symptoms...you already can have issues with gait, balance, speech, and so on and if you add alcohol...it can be dangerous. I'd say don't go for self-mutilation.

Here in upstate New York, we have a local brewery that only brews gluten free beers. The primary ingredient is Soghrum. Not sure if that makes it a better choice.
