I am finding all this information on magnesium quite interesting. I am not sure what led me to do it, but I began taking Slo-Mag for headaches and general malaise several years ago. Now I try to take it regularly, but when I run out I sometimes forget to buy it for awhile- until that is, I begin feeling crappy and headache-y again, which reminds me.

To learn it could be a better choice to help lower cholesterol is good to hear, especially in that it kind of gives the body what it needs instead of blindly forcing all the cholesterol out, which I understand not to be ideal in the long run. But I wonder what role magnesium might have to play in MS?

Magnesium relaxes muscles (both skeletal and smooth).
Magnesium is necessary for energy.
Magnesium reduces anxiety.
Many MS symptoms are also magnesium deficiency symptoms.
Magnesium is an essential nutrient.
Most people do not get enough magnesium.

hey OF not sure if you saw that post I sent you on another topic, re the fact that slo mag contains about twice as much calcium as magnesium... ms patients often have okay calcium status but noticeably lower magnesium levels. the calcium in the slo mag will actually work against the results you want from the mag.. hence 'slo' I guess. might be a good idea to find a nice soluble organic absorbable form of magnesium supplement like magnesium glycinate..

The 2-to-1 calcium-to-magnesium ratio (2:1) was
first suggested by the French magnesium researcher
Jean Durlach5 as a high limit not to be exceeded, when
he warned against excessive calcium relative to magnesium
intakes; that is, one’s calcium intake from all
sources including food, water and supplements should
not exceed one’s total magnesium intake by more than
2 parts calcium to 1 part magnesium on a weight basis.

Hmmmm... that's interesting about the calcium, but I've had really good results from Slo-Mag in the past, so maybe for some reason, it works for me. But I will definitely look into it further. Thanks!

no worries, but if you find yourself any problems that line up with known magnesium deficiency symptoms - such as pain or muscle tightness/spasm to name just a couple - that's when it might be time to find a different product.

Magnesium appears to be a vastly superior alternative:

I am on Statins (Lipitor), but i do NOT take it for the normal "Statin effects" on cholesterol. The research I remember reading found that it actually reduced the BBB permeability. ie an MS specific issue.

If you want cholesterol improvement (I don't think it lowers bad cholesterol but increases good cholesterol), then look into B3.

As a cholesterol treatment, niacin has strong evidence. Several studies have shown that it can boost levels of good HDL cholesterol and lower triglycerides as well or better than some prescription drugs. Niacin also modestly lowers bad LDL cholesterol. It's often prescribed in combination with statins for cholesterol control, such as Crestor, Lescol, or Lipitor.

Don't confuse the use of statins in MS with cholesterol control, you may be selling it short. They do have side effects concern, but so do other MS medications.

Thanks CureOrBust. I was unaware of the BBB factor. Both Magnesium and Niacin are certainly very helpful for cholesterol management.
