Going through some pretty weird symptoms

Post by ashy555 »

I haven't been diagnosed with anything yet but I am being ushered to see a Neurologist.
I am a 24 year old girl.. and healthy.
I have Coeliac disease and sometimes it can cause neurological problems(went through a phase of Vertigo about 2 years ago) but the past few weeks have been strange.
About 3 weeks ago I started experiencing numbing sensations on my tongue. At one stage it happened while I was eating and thought some chemical had snuck its way into my food while cooking. It felt strange. For about a week it kept happening almost every day. I didn't think much of it. Then a week after experiencing that.. while leaving work my right arm suddenly became very painful and weak. I dropped my bag halfway down the stairs and couldn't even pick up the handles it was that weak. It started throbbing and felt numb. I picked everything up with my left hand and walked out of work to my car.
I called a nurse on call once in my car for advice and he said to see someone straight away. Once my strength was better I drove to a Dr close by who did a neurological examination.. She then sent me to emergency for further testing to rule out a mini stroke(tia) and mentioned something about MS. When I got there my arm felt a lot better. He did an ECG and another neurological examination and it was all normal. He did no scans and no bloods. He sent me home by myself. Next morning I was back to normal. No pain what so ever.
I ended up booking an appnt with my dr as follow up just in case(I almost cancelled). I saw her a week after the episode while the tongue numbness sensations continued a few more times. She was appalled that the hospital did no scans or blood tests and sent me home by myself. She thinks I suffered a transient ischemic attack(mini stroke) and sent me for an MRI brain straight away. Saw the results today(I work in a hospital) and seem fairly normal but suggesting an MRI of the cervical Spine.(my doc hasnt seen it yet.. im booked in with her on Friday when she is next in)

Today for the 3rd time in the past two weeks my right arm is feeling heavy, weak and a little stiff(but i can still use it) No pain but kinda numb. The first few times it only lasted a few hrs, but today it has been 5 hours and still going. It feels like I have lost circulation in my right arm and really starting to annoy me. I keep having to shake my arm to help it or something but it doesn't. For about 15 seconds my right leg went numb as well. When I compare my hands they are similar in colour except my right is a little darker(not a huge difference though)

I don't want to go to emergency again as I don't feel its quite necessary but a few people and the drs keep mentioning MS.
Ive been told to go see a neurologist as soon as I can. Do these symptoms seem like possible MS symptoms. I just dont feel they quite meet up with common ms symptoms.

I hope you've managed to see a doctor by now (though some doctors have HUGE waiting lists), but I can give you my two cents (despite not having a diagnosis yet myself).

What you are describing doesn't sound normal, there is definitely something wrong. In my own situation, I followed doctor recommendations as best as I could and went to specialists even if I didn't agree entirely with the proposed diagnosis. If nothing else, if gives you a data point. "Things are bad right now, but at least my MRI is normal. Things are bad right now, but at least I don't have X or Y or Z", that sort of thing. Even better, the doctor might say "No, it isn't this thing, but *I* know of this other thing I want to test for that your General Practitioner didn't think of", and that moves you forward. And of course, the hope is that the doctor actually diagnoses it. Of course, everyone has limited time, money, willpower and patience, so it's up to you ultimately to decide how many potential wild goose chases you want to go on.

As far as "common ms symptoms", it seems like the disease is pretty varied, even having "Paroxysmal" symptoms that are transient rather than long lived.
