If it's on your mind and it has to do with multiple sclerosis in any way, post it here.

Alpha Lipoic Acid

Post by lovebug »

My Neurologist recently suggested that I try 1200 mg. of Alpha Lipoic Acid per day for nerve pain.
Has anybody tried this?
After 14 yrs. living with MS I doubt I will ever find relief but I keep trying.
Its been a long time since I have posted on here and I think I have missed much.

I'd prefer Na-R-ALA for various reasons but ask first your neurologist

I also take Na-R-Lipoate. It’s the sodium salt of R-Lipoic Acid. The R form is the natural form found in the body. The sodium salt form is stabilized so it prevents it from polymerizing which is a problem with R-Lipoic Acid. In contrast, Alpha Lipoic Acid is a 50/50 mix of the R and S isomers. The S form is a byproduct of chemical synthesis and has some negative effects that aren’t seen with the R form. Another benefit of Na-R-Lipoic Acid is that it has 6-12 times better absorption than S-Lipoic Acid so you can take a lower dose. You can read through some of my posts on Lipoic Acid.

There are several brands of Na-R-Lipoate available. Here’s the Na-R-Lipoate that I use.
