Thyroid Issues and interferon

Post by kareng7 »

Just followed an interesting line of research about thyroid problems and MS--since thryoid runs in my family. I found a study that says up to 24% of the people on interferon 1-a and 1-b develop hypothyroidism within the first year of treatment. Hypothyroidism can cause hair loss.

This study suggests you get tested if you're using interferon.

Have any of you had your doc test you for thyroid issues? If so, any results to share?

Karen,
Thanks for the link. My doc asks me to get my blood tested every 3 months to monitor interferon effects on liver, thyroid, etc. After one year, I haven't had any problems with the thyroid.

Hi all,

I have been on Rebif for about 2 years now. My white cell counts are a little off (low) but other than that, I guess I am okay.

peace,
