Tumeric and inflammation

Post by whiteflag »

Hi I'm new here, so...hi all.

Dx'd in 2004, having my first major flare-up now, not sure how to handle it. I live in - and am from - a 3rd world country with very limited access to healthcare unless its private therefore its *really* expensive (especially in anything specialised like neurology).

I tend to do this thinking-out-aloud thing so pls forgive me if you dont like any of my posts.

Much has been speculated about the use of tumeric (in tablet form or in food) in helping calm inflammation in the body.

What I wonder is that, since there's no direct evidence that it helps in MS patients, but since its also a totally natural ingredient, there can't be any harm in taking it anyway.

Just a thought. You have any on this?

heya, welcome to TIMS.

turmeric is a powerful anti-inflammatory, and ms involves chronic inflammation. so i would say, go for it!

do you know about inflammation factor (IF) ratings for foods? you can track your daily intake, and people with inflammatory illness need to aim for an overall daily IF score of at least +200. you can see the IF rating for different things by using the site search at www.nutritiondata.com.

hope that helps!

I have been using curcumin (the extract from tumeric) for a few years now. I have noticed on days when I take it, I am sure the tingling in my feet is slightly reduced. I take mega doses (up to 10 or more a day in two doses), and have had no ill effects. But I also note, its nowhere near as effective as oral steriods.

I use the following one, because it is the easiest to take. Others leave an after taste or leave powder on your fingers which if your not careful, can put stains on whatever you touch.

I don't take it in supplement form but do try and incorporate it into food wherever possible; This includes;

Soups
curries
goulash
chilli

A low dose approach really. :)
