Strangely, this sort of diet was recommended to me by my GP a few years ago - for very high cholesterol levels. I felt great on it and my LDL and Triglycerides plummeted and the HDL rose to almost within the normal range.
Of course, this sort of diet is not recommended as an MS diet by nearly all of the commentators. But if the extreme low-fat diets don't work for some and work fine for others, then why not this one?
BTW, before the low-carb diet was recommended I did suffer two years of the Ornish diet, which is similar to the Swank diet and my cholesterol didn't improve and I felt awful with constant heartburn.
The thing is, that I feel so brainwashed by all the low-fat writers and MS experts that I am actually quite scared of the thought of trying something like this.
I'd love to see a daily eating plan and seeing as I try to avoid dairy and feel better for it, this may be difficult!

I am guessing this was before you experienced youre MS symptons? If not, are you saying you "felt great" in that your MS symptons were reduced?

I noticed no-one else has stepped up to the plate either. doh! anyone?

The article (or review of it) suggests a ration of 2% carbs, 90% fats and 8% protein. I just cannot see how it would be possible without eating a serving of lard on a plate.
I just cant even think of any foods that have such a mix of the fat, protein and carbs. The Atkins diet is extreme, but i CAN see the practicality of finding foods to fit it. But these numbers are off the wall. What were you eating mrsenstitz while on your diet? did you achieve these ratios?

Hi,
Yes, it was about a year before. All the normal statin drugs weren't working and it was becoming more difficult to control the cholesterol levels. I was really hypothryroid as well but had been told that thyroxine wouldn't work. Hmm, well it did! There's a link between hypothyroidism and type X-like lipid readings.
Once I was diagnosed, I changed my diet again but still had to watch the GI content of meals. It can be difficult when you are trying to eat a low saturated fat diet and a low GI diet at the same time! But it is possible with a good helping of oily fish. (Though very boring!)
I don't really know about the MS symptoms because this was in the 12 months before I was diagnosed and my relapses in that year were triggered by two operations and an immune reaction to hyaluronic acid.
Mmm, lard.
But no, I haven't tried cutting the carbs and upping the fats yet, though I am tempted. I like fruit though and try to eat 3 pieces per day at least.
Perhaps there's a compromise?
Lots of nuts and seeds and oily fish plus fruit and no bread or potatoes or pulses plus a good old wodge of Italian cured lard!
I haven't had a cholesterol test for 4 years. This is because we moved back to the UK from Asia and the NHS don't consider a woman under 50 as being at risk. Yeah, right not smart, but since the statins don't work for me, there's not a lot more I can do!
