Running could one day help prevent Multiple Sclerosis and other neurodegenerative diseases, according to a study which found that exercise releases a molecule which repairs the brain. Using mice, researchers at The Ottawa Hospital and the University of Ottawa found that this molecule, called VGF nerve growth factor, helps to heal myelin – the protective coating that surrounds and insulates nerve fibres...Read more -

This is real. It is VGF (a growth factor) that makes (for these mice with a demyelinating disease) the difference between a third of a lifetime, and a full lifetime. They make the mice run, on a treadmill, and that makes them produce more VGF. It was all over the news yesterday.

So it might make sense to run/exercise AFTER diagnosis too! I know I feel great after I exercise...

Exercise is exercise and is ultimately good for you in whatever form it takes. I can no longer run either and like you I also do a lot of cycling!
Time magazine recently published an interesting article on exercise and how it relates beatifically to those with illnesses.
“There is no pill that comes close to what exercise can do”

I watched a show (The Agenda) on TVO, where the woman being interviewed worked with kids with Cerebral Palsy. She said, sometimes these kids can't walk, but they can run. To me, the implication is that foot-drop may be habitual in nature (I can hold my foot on my bicycle pedal most of the time now). She said you must judge by a person's highest function. A lot of why I am limited is because I don't want to repeat accidents I have had. I think since neuroplasticity is involved, foot-drop may be a breakable habit. Wouldn't it be great if we could get better by running?

I would say that they have cured EAE again. Mice should be happy.
