has anybody heard about "molecular phenotypes"?

I had never heard before about it but it seems that there is some research about molecular signatures in MS as a marker of the underlying process.
I have read about it for the first time today here:
The autoimmune risk gene ZMIZ1 is a vitamin D responsive marker of a molecular phenotype of multiple sclerosis

but after googling for it I have found some previous articles about it. For example:
