Vertigo & spins - treatments?

Post by SystemError »

So I woke up with vertigo today and have been experiencing spins and light-headedness all day when I try to do anything other than lie down. I've never had this symptom before. I've heard travel sickness medicine is recommended for this - can anyone recommend one that works for them, or any other treatments or tips?

Sorry, I'm finding it really hard to go through everything on that link to work out what's going on... Lots of different conversations. Could you perhaps summarise for me what has worked for you?

hi i basically just got back on track with my daily nutrient intake. stopped skipping meals. ate particularly high nutrient density whole foods for meals and snacks.

emphasized anti inflammatory, antioxidant food choices. ppl w vertigo have been shown to have lower antioxidant status.

took my high quality multi 3 times a day, like it's supposed to be taken.

made sure daily magnesium (antiinflammatory, antioxidant) intake was right up there. aimed for the daily minimum from food (which i consider 7mg/km body weight per day), then added a high quality supplement for good measure (from mag glycinate, adds another 180mg elemental mag). extra mag helps you use d3, which is also in the picture where vertigo is concerned.

i topped up on zinc (antioxidant, anti-inflammatory) - always best from food sources, and must be properly balanced with copper any time it's taken in pill form eg zinc citrate.

low iron status is another possible candidate where vertigo is concerned. zinc and iron compete with each other when taken supplementally so yet another reason to emphasize nutrient dense dietary sources. for iron that means bioavailable heme (animai) sources, or alternatively non heme (veg) sources in combination with loads of vit c (many eg red pepper, strawberries, broccoli, all of which have more vit C than orange juice). and with vit C we find ourselves back at antioxidants. kind of a theme hehe.

Vertigo is one of my primary symptoms. It's awful, I feel for you.

First you'll want confirm it's MS-related. More likely it's an inner ear issue. The best way to find out is by performing the Epley Maneuver. Your neurologist can do this, and you can even try it on yourself. http://www.webmd.com/a-to-z-guides/libe ... y-maneuver

For nausea, I take children's liquid gravol. It doesn't knock me out like regular gravol.

Avoid reading, using your phone, watching TV for a few days. Podcasts and audio books are my go-to entertainment.

If the neurologist determines this is MS-related, he/she can give you steroids to speed up recovery. If it's an inner ear thing, decongestants and medications such as Cirque are effective.

All the best.

somebody mentioned epley maneuver to me as well, but the nutritional approach worked out so i never got around to trying it.

OT but with connections:

just had some back and forth on nausea with a family member dealing with morning sickness. i looked into it. looked like b6 was a thing to try. a certain dose. prenatals already in use weren't quite getting there. next thing i hear, a prescription is helping. what is it i ask. diclectin. so what does that turn out to be? a long recommended vit b6/antihistamine combo product, recently discredited as no more effective than b6 alone. can i find the meta analysis of b6 studies that provides any weighty evidence in favour of b6 for nausea, esp morning sickness or the more severe hyperemesis gravidarum? no. still:
Medical journal withdraws recommendation of morning sickness pill
https://www.thestar.com/news/canada/201 ... -pill.html
Canadian Family Physician journal no longer recommends Diclectin as the go-to treatment, renouncing guidelines by embattled Motherisk.
Motherisk and Canadian Family Physician
http://www.cfp.ca/content/63/1/13.full? ... 2f4eca924d
Would a more formal double-blind peer-review process have detected the problems with the Motherisk NVP guidelines? It is hard to know with certainty. It was only through a thorough re-evaluation of the literature, prompted by questions from a patient to a family physician researcher, that led to this discovery. Evidence is not static; re-evaluation of accepted truths should not be seen as a weakness as new information comes forward.
kewl :) a member recently said something along the lines of scientists thinking they know everything. it's my understanding of science that it's an ongoing process of inquiry. keep questioning, all :)

The available information about this “8-way Bendectin” trial indicates it should not be used to support the efficacy of doxylamine, pyridoxine or dicyclomine for the treatment of nausea and vomiting during pregnancy because of a high risk of bias.
so did the b vits in my high quality multi and nutrient dense food choices have a role in the disappearance of my own recent vertigo issues? i have no idea, but the vertigo is thankfully gone :)

wonder what else contributes to this general phenom.

k back to vertigo!!

Thanks for all this, guys.

An update: the vertigo stopped yesterday after a few incidents, each lasting about 30 seconds. Since then I've just had general light headedness. Not sure if this is an MS relapse or not. It certainly improved overnight, so it's not as bad today as it was yesterday, but still feeling a little woozy.

I guess I'll just continue to monitor the situation, but the idea of it being related to a magnesium deficiency is interesting because I already started taking mag supplements last week, due to muscle cramping.

Hi SystemError,
It's good to hear that your symptoms are better. I had vertigo once a few years ago that I attributed to damage related to my then recent diagnosis of B12 deficiency. My vertigo symptoms were reversed. I couldn't bear lying down since it was so bad, but I was fine sitting up. I spent the night sleeping in a recliner chair. The symptoms were better the next day though. However, sometimes I still get a slight room spinning effect when lying down, but without the nausea. I just close my eyes and things are fine.

Not to knock other commenters but I would always try non-pharmaceutical methods if they exist.

And for BPPV - benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, which I am definitely NOT diagnosing you with as I am not a diagnostician, I will just add to your knowledge with the following:

Epley and/or Semont Maneuvers. Google these! I know they look super weird but if you have crystals where they aren't supposed to be (now I really sound like a quack) then these simple techniques will work when done right.

Good luck :)

In early June I had an attack of vertigo. Never happened before. I was in the hospital for 3 days then released with the diagnosis of M.S. Just a few days ago they added the diagnosis of anti-phospholipid syndrome. I'm on blood thinners and once a month I get a treatment of tysabri. I don't know which is the real agent, MS or APL? Maybe both. But I'm 60 and never had any of the common signs of MS.
