I've seen epidemiological claims that MS only occurs in 1 in 1000 to 1 in 3000 people. However, everyone I know knows someone with MS, or there's someone in your family, etc. Why do I get the feeling that the numbers are being talked down by public health people, and the reality is the rate is much higher?

People are getting diagnosed with MS faster than they're dying off. Yet, the estimated number of people in the US has remained at 400,000 for the last 15 years or so. It's likely so that the pharmas can get orphan drug status for easier approval.

It also makes me wonder how a 'rare immune disorder' is actually becoming quite prevalent -- almost like a genetic weakness to some transmissible disease?
