Applying the 2017 McDonald diagnostic criteria for multiple sclerosis (2018)

The recent Position Paper by Alan Thompson and colleagues reviewed the 2010 McDonald criteria and recommended revisions to allow for the more rapid diagnosis of multiple sclerosis. 1 Increased diagnostic sensitivity is expected to be achieved by extension of the criteria of dissemination in space and time. In addition to juxtacortical lesions, cortical lesions can now be used to fulfil MRI criteria for dissemination in space. Furthermore, both symptomatic and asymptomatic MRI lesions can be considered in the determination of dissemination in space or time. Most importantly, CSF oligoclonal bands experience a renaissance as they can now be used as a substitute for dissemination in time.

It has been my understanding that CSF oligoclonal bands were not specific to MS. Is this not correct?
