Probably this also means that degeneration is a direct consecuence of demyelination. This was not clear before this report.

Findings that remyelination protects axons from degeneration in animal models of multiple sclerosis (MS) have been replicated in humans in a study published in the European Journal of Neurology.
PET and MRI were used to monitor demyelination and remyelination in white matter lesions in 19 people with MS over a 4-month period.
A higher index of remyelination was associated with greater preservation of the microstructure of surrounding tissue, indicating reduced neuroaxonal damage.
