Whilst it has been suspected for many years that molecular mimicry with self-antigens may be driving elevations of EBNA1 IgG in MS, evidence was lacking until recent discoveries showed that antibodies generated against EBNA1 are able to bind homologous epitopes from human proteins, including anoctamin-2 (ANO2), glial cell adhesion molecule (GlialCAM) and CRYAB.
