Michael Dake, David Magnus appointed to endowed chairs
Two members of the medical school faculty have been appointed to endowed professorships: Michael Dake, MD, and David Magnus, PhD.

Michael Dake
Dake, professor of cardiothoracic surgery, has been named the Thelma and Henry Doelger Professor (III) of Cardiovascular Surgery, effective Dec. 8.

Dake’s research focuses on endovascular device development and management of aortic pathologies. He is known for his work in the image-guided treatments for arterial disease (hardening of the arteries) and venous disease, which occurs when veins become blocked. Dake first came to Stanford in 1990 as section chief of cardiovascular and interventional radiology and co-director of the catheterization and angiography lab.

The professorship was established in 1979 with a gift of $1 million from Mrs. Thelma Doelger. At this time, the endowment of this chair has grown to the point where it can be split to support three chairs, the Thelma and Henry Doelger Professorship of Cardiovascular Surgery (currently held by D. Craig Miller, MD), the Thelma and Henry Doelger Professorship of Cardiovascular Surgery II and the Thelma and Henry Doelger Professorship of Cardiovascular Surgery III.

The late Henry Doelger was founder and president of Henry Doelger Builders, Inc
Congratulations, Dr. Dake!

Kudos for Dr. Dake! Hmmm...I'd love to be a fly on the walls of the neurology department.

Thanks, Sharon. It's nice to see the public/press reminder that Dr. Dake is considered a true asset to Stanford, and is well respected by doctors around the world. Endowed professorships are the highest honor a university can bestow on faculty members.

Does that mean he can't be fired, like a professor who gets tenure?
Anyhow, take that you miserable neurology department!

Ditto! In my recent letter to Stanford, I'm afraid I couldn't resist a little dig at neurology. I wrote something like "the field of neurology has had over 150 years to come up with a solution to MS. So far their results have been nugatory. It is time for others to contribute research." Go DAKE!!!!!

If nothing else I learned a new word: nugatory. Awesome word. :D
