MS relapse more common after in vitro fertilisation procedure

Women with multiple sclerosis may have an increased risk of relapse in the months following in vitro fertilization (IVF), a French study showed.

The annualized relapse rate (ARR), or the number of relapses divided by the person-years at risk, was significantly higher during the 3-month period following IVF (mean ARR 1.60) compared with the 3 months just prior to the procedure (mean ARR 0.80) and a 3-month control period a year before the procedure (mean ARR 0.68), according to David-Axel Laplaud, MD, PhD, of the University of Nantes in France, and colleagues.

The greater risk was possibly associated with a failure of the procedure to result in pregnancy and the use of gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonists to desensitize the ovaries, the researchers reported online in the Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery & Psychiatry.... My biggest relapse in March followed IVF (which I got OHSS from) in Dec. That one was the biggest I had ever had.
My second IVF (which was an attempt just to freeze embryos) I again in March had a relapse but I didn't get OHSS from the second IVF and was on copaxone the whole time so I think that made it less severe.
