LATEST: Talk show host MONTEL WILLIAMS has quit his long-running U.S. TV programme because the multiple sclerosis he suffers from is beginning to take a grip.
The star was diagnosed with the debilitating disease in 1999, but admits it has only recently started to progress, prompting his decision to take early retirement at the age of 51.
A source tells U.S. tabloid the National Enquirer, "Montel is quitting his show because he's starting to see signs his disease is progressing. The weakness in his arms and legs is increasing. He's worried that he'll have problems while taping a show.
"Montel said he doesn't want that captured on tape, so he wants to step down while he's still relatively healthy.
"He also wants to spent quality time with his wife Tara while he is healthy." Williams has hosted the Montel Williams Show since 1991.

Well, we spoke to folks at his foundation a few days ago and they said he's shopping the show around to other networks, so this may just be tabloid rumor mongering.

While the National Enquirer is a good source for reliable alien siting reportings, it may not be for this case :-)

From Wikipedia:

"Fox Stations and Montel's TV career

Shortly before Fox-owned and operated television stations in major markets terminated Montel's talk-show contract, Montel appeared in an interview on Fox News Channel's Fox and Friends, and was asked to discuss Heath Ledger's death. He used the interview to point out that TV networks had continued to extensively cover Mr. Ledger's death while ignoring the deaths of 28 US soldiers in Iraq since the beginning of the year. Montel expressed sympathy for Mr. Ledger's family and remorse for his passing but also encouraged the three interviewers to recognize the absence of coverage for the US soldiers killed in Iraq. The interviewers sought to point out that their audience wanted celebrity news and it was more interesting than soldier deaths. Montel suggested that US news networks had the capacity to lead the country's attitudes by placing more importance on US deaths in Iraq than the deaths of celebrities. Montel noted that he had awoken that morning very saddened by the unknown names of those slain in Iraq and was further saddened when he could not find their names on the web.

Three minutes into this awkward segment on Fox, one host cut off Montel in order to go to a commercial. Montel did not return after the break.

Four days later, after 17 years as a television host, Montel lost his job."

Not to get into politics but I really think this is a good call on Montel's part!

Also to add, I'm not sure why he did it. Maybe he is just plain sick of the way things are going, it certainly didn't look like his "retirement" was due to MS.
