Recent Cases of Lead Poisoning From Ayurvedic Medications from India

Public health officials have reported six cases of lead poisoning among foreign-born women who took Ayurvedic herbal products imported from India. The cases were reported by the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.

Lead poisoning was associated with the use of 10 oral Ayurvedic medications in 2011 and 2012. Lead concentrations in the products were found to be as high as 2.4% and several medications also contained mercury or arsenic. Since 2004, a total of 22 medicines have been identified with high metal content. These are:

- Calabash Chalk (Nzu)
- Emperor's Tea Pill (concentrated)
- Garbha Chintamani Ras (Vrihat)(Swarna Yukt)
- Garbha Dharak Yog
- Garbhapal Ras (healthy pregnancy)
- Garbhapal Ras (to have male baby)
- Hepatico Extract (concentrated)
- Jambrulin
- Kankayan Bati (Gulma)
- Lakshmivilash Ras (Nardiya)
- Laxmana Louh
- Maha Sudarshan
- Mahashakti Rasayan
- Mahayogaraj Guggulu (enriched with silver)
- Ovarin
- Pigmento
- Pregnita
- Sorin
- Tierra Santa
- Vasant Kusumakar Ras (with Gold and Pearl)
- Vatvidhwansan Ras
