Everything is a compromise. I'd say use faster acting non-food based supplements to get out of the danger zones of depletion and maintain/perfect levels through food based supplements and diet. Gotta do what ya gotta do.
as always, it's dangerous to try to paint things black and white. situation is too complex. that said, we've made the distinction all along between inorganic and organic forms of magnesium ie magnesium oxide is inorganic insoluble while mag glycinate is organic soluble. and as always the emphasis is food first, with a recognition that sometimes a supplement may be needed to reach optimal status. and yes, mag oxide is less effective than mag glycinate. but the fact is, it was what i used when i first started working against vitamin d3, and even mag oxide did do me a lot of good in a matter of a day or two.
