This is the place to ask questions if you have symptoms that suggest MS, but aren't yet diagnosed.

Curious symptoms....Can anyone relate?

Postby Keldal » Wed Jan 30, 2013 6:17 pm

Hi! I have not been diagnosed yet, but my MRI states "Clinical History: Multiple Sclerosis". Anyway...Almost two Fridays ago I awoke from my nap fully paralyzed, unable to move my arms and legs. Luckily my hubby arrived home 20 min. later and helped me! :). I had decreased sensation, and could feel him pick up each limb to reposition them. However I was not able to moe anything. Within a few minutes, I regained a teeny bit of strength, but not enough to care for myself, at all. Every day/night if I lay still, all limbs do 'dead' and I need someone to move them so I regain some strength. I have not recovered.

My brain MRI shows: "There is a subtle linear increased T2 signal within the splenium extending towards the right side". AND "There is some minimal increased signal also of the superior margin of the genu which may represent a tiny amount of lipoma". (I've had a lipoma in the corpus colossus for 14 yrs, but this last finding is new...and likely not a lipoma) AND "Mild mucosal thickening and/or effusion is again seen within the right mastoid air cells". My cervical and lumbar do not show lesions.)

I had a LP yesterday so the results should be easy next week. I have had an EMG done in Dec which showed a nerve issue in both cervical and lumbar spine issues, yet the neurosurgeon said that the herniations are not the cause of an abnormal EMG. He had no opinion of what's causing it symptoms. I have had weakness in both right arm and leg for 5 months. I assumed it was due to herniations but surgeon said no. Various times I would wake up with fully asleep arms, but feeling and strength would come back.

These last two weeks are different. I can use my fingers for short periods of time, and walk with a walker for short distances to the bathroom only. I need help to do everything because of severe weakness and the feeling that my limbs are in concrete.

Thanks for your comments, I have no idea if this is MS or not. Thanks!

Welcome to the ThisIsMS, Kelley. You certainly have had a frightening experience! Your condition may well be MS; but many other conditions share the same symptoms, so you may well NOT have MS.

I venture to say that every member of this website has a unique set ideas about MS. MINE revolve around excess insulin as a possible cause. For that reason, I encourage everyone to request a "fasting blood insulin test;" the optimal test result should be 3 UU/ML or lower – my insulin test result has never been below 9.

Excess insulin can cause insulin resistance in skeletal muscles as well as the smooth muscles. Your symptoms (paralysis, weakness) seem to involve the muscles; a fasting blood insulin test could rule out the possibility of insulin resistance and excess insulin.
My hypothesis: excess insulin (hyperinsulinemia) plays a major role in MS, as developed in my initial post: http://www.thisisms.com/forum/general-discussion-f1/topic1878.html "Insulin – Could This Be the Key?"
