Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a disease caused by damage to myelin -- the protective covering wrapped around the nerves of the central nervous system (CNS).

This study, paid for by grants from the Canadian MS Society and the CIHR, (the same groups lead investigator Dr. Wong works for as a medical advisor, approving said grants) identifies EMMPRIN as elevated at the site of MS lesions. Interestingly, there are studies already completed, showing EMMPRIN is elevated in cerebral ischemia due to stroke. This is not a "new" target discovery. It is a discovery already made by vascular researchers.

does this mean they could really be one step closer to the "cure" they spoke of when I was diagnosed?!?

welcome, jtj...
don't know who "they" are or when you were diagnosed with MS, or if there will ever be a cure (anymore than there will ever be a cure for strokes) but a few of us from this board have taken research from Italy around the world. Go to www.ccsvi.org to learn more. I believe the connection of MS to other neurovascular diseases and stroke is starting to be illucidated.

Sorry, you're absolutely right, I shouldn't use the generic they, I was told by my small-town Ohio neurologist, I don't blame him, I just was taking hope and love the possibility.

Maybe not curing yet Jaime but I think we are getting pretty close to stopping the progression of MS. There has been a lot of progress in undertsanding autoimmune diseases which hopefully will pay off for us soon!
