Fumaric acid is a metabolite involved in the citric acid cycle in mitochondria. BG12 is the dimethyl ester of fumaric acid or dimethyl fumarate. BG12 induces oxidative stress in the cell and causes it to switch into defense mode by activating the transcription factor Nrf2. Once activateed, Nrf2 goes into the nucleus and turns on the transcription of several genes for cellular detox antioxidant enzymes. There are abundant molecules in nature that have a similar function. One example is curcumin from turmeric, but there are many more.

Here is the chemical structure of dimethyl fumarate.

It is the carbon/carbon double bond, C=C, conjugated with the carbonyl groups, C=O, that give it the ability to oxidize thiol groups, -SH, and thereby activate Nrf2.

Compare the above structure to those depicted in figure 2 of this free review paper on Nrf2 activators.

Hey L, I've asked my private quack to see if he can get this stuff cheaply as it's already licensed for other conditions, psoriasis, I think. Dr Kapoor seemed very enthusiastic about it since its side effect profile is good.
Will keep you posted.
Am going to see Dr Sclafani in July.

Hi,

Kapoor is well. He's always friendly and kind. He appears in one of the NHS magazines on disease modifying drugs. It's good to know they don't waste money on actors! Like in America.

I can't wait for Sclafani to investigate my renal vein as I strongly suspect this may have a severe blockage but we'll see.

Has your MS settled back down? I really hope so.

Actually fumeric acid is a supplement and can be gotten at any online vitamin store. It's cheap too.. don't rush in I have read it is also useless.
I have seen where it will not do us any good to take. Something about the wrong (esters) I think.
It's just not the right compound.
Something like that, but close.
