Plus, John Cale did a much better cover.

However, I would add: Jeff Buckley's version of Hallelujah > L.C.'s version. This is fact.

IMHO, the quintessential version of the song is performed by K.D. Lang at the Juno awards in 2005. I recall reading that after hearing this performance Cohen thought that there was no longer any point in doing the song . . . . and another person commenting that God must have this version on his iPod. Prepare to be inspired.

While it may be the quintessential version (as in the most typical of a type or form), Leonard Cohen's is still the essential version (as in necessary, indispensable.)
