Most importantly, vitamin D requires and 'uses up' magnesium to convert from supplements or sun into its active form in the blood.

Re: The "Problem" with Vitamin D
From my personal experience, I believe I really drove my magnesium levels down with the 5,000 to 10,000 iu per day of vitamin D. I have not touched Vitamin D, since, for over 6 months.
I have been working on getting the (intracellular) Mg levels up for about a year -- it is not so easy, and I have been using oral and topical Mg.

Re: The "Problem" with Vitamin D
there's all kinds of stuff to read, for sure.. but it would be nice to just have a straight up study where n humans had d and mag measured, then took d3 for a long time and measured effects on serum mag.

Re: The "Problem" with Vitamin D
There is no $ in it. I think that is the issue, but you already know that.

Re: The "Problem" with Vitamin D
I'm hoping they just haven't gotten around to it yet. when it comes down to it, I don't think this research gap is really first on my personal list either.. hmm I should start making a list of studies to attend to at some point in the future

Re: The "Problem" with Vitamin D
I seem to have found a happy medium since 2011 when I was taking >10K a day of D3. I always know when I'm Mg deficient as I develop tension in my upper back muscles and calves.
Summer I average about 4.5K IU a day D3
Winter I average about 6K IU a day D3
Plus I live in a sunny climate and eat a lot of oily fish (mainly salmon)
Magnesium - I take 400mg of Magnesium citrate and about 100mg (MgO) from my multivitamin.

Re: The "Problem" with Vitamin D
I would consider the strong possibility that you could be low in Magnesium even if your upper back muscles or calves are not tense, especially considering the high amount vitamin D you consume. It sounds like you consume more than enough Vitamin D to cause a magnesium deficiency even considering the fact that you take some Magnesium.

Re: The "Problem" with Vitamin D
it's so funny, all they actually need is to understand what 'normal' really means. there should be a warning on EVERY 'normal' result if people don't understand stats. :S jeesh.

Re: The "Problem" with Vitamin D
serum magnesium test is useless. it will allways tell your mg is ok:
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/7572055
magnesium in erythrocytes will tell you more but it's expensive and not available in some countries.

Re: The "Problem" with Vitamin D
it's actually quite useful.. you just have to refuse to be told 'normal', get the result as a number with units, and completely ignore the lab's range. has to be well up into the top of the range to be good enough. specifics are in the ms nutrient targets link in my signature. I can't figure out how to make it a working link, sry

I can do THAT lol. I can't get links to work in the signature though
