PPMS + Cancer Diagnosis

Post by davehix »

PPMS for 20 years. Now diagnosed with oesophageal cancer at an early stage. Been told not fit enough to undergo surgery, suggesting chemo/radiotherapy. Has anyone been down this road before? (male of 61 years of age).

Your thoughts or stories would be appreciated.

Are you taking any of the DMDs for MS? There are no drugs that have been approved by the FDA for PPMS, http://www.nationalmssociety.org/What-i ... ressive-MS but neurologists will sometimes prescribe them anyway, since they are allowed to go off label on a drug if they think it might benefit the patient.
Anyway most of those drugs are immune suppressants and could inhibit your body's immune system from fighting off cancer.

Sorry to hear about your diagnosis Dave. I don't have any relevant experience, but I wish you the best of luck. Chemotherapy for cancer has been reported to induce remission in relapsing multiple sclerosis, but I don't think I have hear reports on a benefit for PPMS. As David1949 said, it may be wise to avoid any immunosuppressants unless there is a clear benefit.
