Lipoatrophy Survey

Post by MattB »

Of all of you who are on Copaxone and how old you are and if you're male or female. I've heard that males tend to get it less, or not at all, and I was just wondering.

I am 46, female, and I definitely have lipoatrophy. Thighs, stomach and hips. Although Teva says it is not that common I would disagree.

In general terms, "lipo" refers to fat. In the case of lipoatrophy, it's usually the fat tissue that underlies the skin. With lipoatrophy, the fat tissue under the skin appears to die off in patches.

At the risk of whistling on the way past the graveyard, I'll mention that
the studies I've read have only found lipoatrophy to occur in females.

One example of this is in the link below (take a look at the p-value
associated with the 10 males in the study NOT having lipo - its stronger
than the clinical trial evidence in favor of using the drug in the first place ... )

I have been on copaxone for 10 years, just the last year I noticed a big dent in either thigh. Is there a way to fix this, maybe cosmetic surgery? Should I let my neuro know?

it's odd because it didnt show until after I had my baby and it just showed up in one day, so it seemed.

female aged 29, was on copaxone for 3 years, lipo started at 6 months and got progressively worse, so much that I ruined my leg and bottom sites... so was reccomended only to inject into stomach area

Stopped the copaxone a year ago (trying for a family)

lipo improved slightly, but still large areas affected.

Please excuse me it my post is redundant but im new. So, witht this drug, you get bumps or fat loss in the injection area? Please be very specific and "elementary". I know NOTHING about anything!

If you look, there is a reference that apeared earlier in this thead.

problem with loss of fat under the skin.

http://www.mult-sclerosis.org/news/Apr2 ... axone.html

This seems to explain it realy well, includes pictures.

I am male, on copaxine over two years, no problems.

I saw that but didnt scroll down far enough. Thanks! I was interested in pictures of the "damage areas". Its hard to tell from those pictures. The womans figure. hard to tell what is normal and what is not!

Long article! I'll be back in a couple hours! lol
