Madison Alumni here. I'm also a former University employee

I couldn't make the talk and the transcript isn't available yet (I will post it once it does become available)

But here is a interview with James Thomson that summarizes his views pretty well.

Don't be too discouraged by his tone, from what I've heard about him from others he's very cautious in what he'll promise about stem cells but aggressive in his research.

The article in the beginning mentions current opposition to the research in our state legislature. That is true but we're fighting back hard! Thomson's involvement in privately funded research is I'm guessing a reaction to this as a way of ensuring the research will continue in case the public money is cut off.

Here's another page devoted to stem cell research at the University of Wisconsin. It includes a tidbit about the Promises 2010 grant the University got to study both stem cell transplantation and minocycline in MS.

I think many of the scientists involved in this area of research are playing it cautious and one of the UK's leading professionals has talked about the over-hyping of stem-cells. But researchers all over the world are pushing on with this so who knows? Fingers crossed!
