I am tired of all the breakthroughs

If it's on your mind and it has to do with multiple sclerosis in any way, post it here.

I am tired of all the breakthroughs

I am really tired of hearing about all the breakthroughs in MS that never come to anything. The URL above is a real story, like that of Dr. Zamboni, about a woman who was ridiculed for 40 years. Like Dr. Paulo Zamboni, she had a real personal connection to MS, which motivated her work.

Now she has found a genetic cause for progressive MS. This news will reverberate throughout the medical and scientific worlds. You heard about it here.

There are some politics here. When I heard this story last night on CBC it had not had the guts taken out of it. Firstly there was no second male professor vetting all the words of this woman. This story has been massively modifieds, and I would dare say suppressed. In the original story, the interview was of a woman named Dessa Sadovnick. She told of how she was ridiculed by other researchers, who would typically ask her "Are you sure you don't mean 'Muscular Dystrophy'?" You will not hear those words on CBC's web site, only the sanitized version.

Now the story has been massaged into what seems to me is a completely different one. I speculate that the powers that be at UBC have intervened to make sure nobody ever hears the original broadcast. Much political weight must have been thrown around to get these changes made before morning. Perhaps our other friends at UBC who have been instrumental in the suppression of CCSVI treatment were also involved here. Some people are not interested in the truth.

I truly hope they are correct, but based on this article about the same breakthrough:

http://www.ctvnews.ca/health/ubc-scient ... -1.2926478

where they state:

"only one in 1,000 MS patients have the mutation in their DNA"
, I wonder if this is truly a breakthrough. They seem to think it is significant. I know little about medical research, certainly not enough to know whether this is a genuine breakthrough or not. Only time will tell...

Thanks for the post 1eye. Very interesting. I hope they can predict very susceptible patients soon. I shudder to think that I might have passed on this vile disease to my children. Mabye this could help "pre treat" likely individuals in some way.

In addition, as stated in interview, this could help researchers come at treatments from another angle for already diagnosed people.

Unfortunately, that kind of research and trials takes time, time that many of us can't wait for.

But I'll be watching!........HUD

Ms. Sadovnick, in the story I heard, held out the hope that this will lead to progress in the treatment of Progressive MS. Again the "different disease" argument is trotted out, without any justification, as if it was written in stone by God, in spite of the fact there is NO DIRECT EVIDENCE for this. This is a real breakthrough. It is the first time this kind of statistically valid evidence has been collected showing a real genetic cause of MS. Odds of the 17 to 1 variety that you will get MS if you have this gene.

The numbers do not lie, or exaggerate, or weaken, the real story. Yes, MS UK has also heard of it. They may even use the word breakthrough.

Funny how all the related items show articles about being tired... :-)
