The worst of the pain lasted about ten days then cleared up. Still prone to achiness with use, but not like it was. Sensitivity to the cold is resolved too.

I have had good luck with using an ordinary (cheap, flimsy) backpack, and sticking a big bag of ice in it. I use a platypus brand waterbag, but you could use a doubled set of gallon ziplocks.
