Malaria preventive medications for MS patients
Malaria preventive medications for MS patients
I was diagnosed with MS in 2001. My condition is good and stable (EDSS 1), and I take a daily Aubagio pill (teriflunomide).
I’m about to travel for 15 days to Namibia & Botswana, where Malaria preventive treatment is recommended.
The doctor at the Travelers’ Clinic suggested Doxylin (Doxycycline).
He thought that Aubagio + Malarone (the standard preventive medicine) might pose an increased risk to liver damage.
(Malarone = atovaquone + proguanil hydrochloride).
Note that I’d need to take Doxylin for 43 days, compared to 18 days of Malarone – so I’m a bit reluctant.
Drawing on your experience / knowledge: Is the combination of Aubagio & Malarone really that bad?
Thanks!

You may wish to read what the Mayo Clinic has to say about Malarone.
