If it's on your mind and it has to do with multiple sclerosis in any way, post it here.

Stem cells trials

Post by bromley »

Dear all,

There are numerous companies looking at using stem cells to combat diseases of the CNS. The attached article shows that some are near to actually starting trials on humans (doesn't specifically mention MS).

PS Apologies Arron. This should be posted in the stem cells section but there seem to be advances reported every week so I thought it was worthy of wider distribution.

Interesting stuff. Here is a little more on stem cells in general (not MS-specific) from an article in this week's Economist,

"According to Bain's estimates, there are now roughly 140 stem-cell-related products in development, for various forms of cancer, liver disease and other conditions. But more than four-fifths of these projects are in early-stage development, where many a gleam in a scientist's eye dies, and still far from the clinical studies where promising new treatments can also still falter."

Dignan,

I think 2010 probably looks a reasonable target. But strides are also being made in far east countries such as Korea and China where ethical issues do not come into play so much and human trials are already taking place. When (if) safe and effective stem cell therapies come on stream, you and I should be at the front of the queue - purely on the basis of the number of postings we make on this site. I might let Arron join us at the front of the queue given his excellent work - hopefully by then he may have got himself a lady friend!

Yikes, I better start posting more then!

Gents, thanks very much for your constant updates. They are appreciated very much.

Here's hoping that we can keep reasonably OK until 2010. That's only 5 years away!

:D

See you in the queue.

Jaded,

We'll reserve a space for you - you might be the lady-friend who Arron is after (I'm assuming you are female? And single?)

Keep well for the next five years.
