This may be true. I don't know. The Canadian MS Society, through the HarperGovernment (C) has attempted to extort $10 million from the Canadian taxpayer and more directly from people with 'MS' by predicating their support of CCSVI research on the issue of the $10 million. The name of this game is money. The people playing it are misusing taxpayers' money courtesy of the Ontario Liberals, with their 'surveillance' project. The people of Manitoba may be next on their hit list, for all I know. Not much surprises me about this situation any more. If 'MS' money is going to dry up, they will try to acquire as much of it as they can before that happens. If anybody is going to be awarded any research money by the marks in Canadian governments wherever they may be, guess who will be at the front of the line? I am so nauseated by the political games and power-seeking around 'MS'. What ever happened to medicine? What ever happened to scientific curiosity? No wonder the suicide rate for pwMS is seven times that of healthy controls.

Yikes! I hope that's not true.

As I understand it from the Manitoba statement, Manitoba "made $5 million available to the Manitoba Health Council to fund clinical trials for treating chronic cerebro-spinal venous insufficiency in patients with mutliple sclerosis."

On a positive note, the Manitoba release also states their studies "will consist of six researchers from across Canada." Possible areas of expertise will include neurology, vascular surgery, interventional radiology, rehabilitiation therapies and clinical trial design. Within that, I'm hoping they may consider Dr. McDonald, even though he is in Ontario.

I did not see any mention of MS Society in Manitoba announcement. However, MSS made their own announcement about the Manitoba funding in which they state "we're pleased the Manitoba government has made MS a top-priority health issue."

That does not give me the impression the Manitoba $5 million is going to MSS. However, this month's issue of MS Canada reports Manitoba committed an additional $500,000 to the Winnipeg MS Clinic. Manitoba also added Tysabri (They did what?!?) to the province's drug formulary. I think all of that is separate from the $5 million for CCSVI research.

Do you have different information, Jackiejay?

found it...on cbc.ca.."MS Treatment: Should the federal government fund exploratory treatment?....you can then vote but the article accompanying this states that "MS Society of Canada has achieved its $10 million goal for trial research"....Manitoba's 5 million and the 5 million that Saskatchewan has pledged.....

Bad, they may be, even while being true... Sounds to me like self-inflicted accounting, self-inflicted extortion, and the 'MS'S not caring unless somebody else pays for it. Unfortunately, the taxpayers get to foot that bill, whether they wanted it or not. Like I said, if anybody is getting paid, they are first at the trough. Dr. Kirsty Duncan thinks there should be an investigation. I think she is right. The 'MS' Society will not care about 'MS' patients, unless taxpayers pay the freight. And certain well-known-ologists take their cut.

It's too bad, for the people in the trenches, that the generals are so crooked.

I think what that statement meant is that the Saskatchewan and Maniotba governments are now providing $10 million, which is the amoount MSS asked for from CIHR (then turned around and served on the so-called expert panel which recommended against clinical trials).

I don't think it necessarily means the $ will go to MSS. At least I hope it doesn't!

I do not speak for Dr. Duncan, but I understood there was a failure to use due diligence and do good science that lead directly to the recommendations of the CIHR panel. The question of how this panel was chosen (by deliberate exclusion of people with knowledge of CCSVI) does not even have to apply. It is enough to say that there was unacceptably poor quality work done, and appearances of conflict of interest. It would be up to investigators to determine the truth of this. As a taxpayer, it is something that bothers me personally.

Here's a link to another report that says funds will be going to Manitoba Health Research Council. There is a quote from an MSS rep, but no indication the $ is going to MSS.
