Researchers at the University of Toronto have found an explanation for how the intestinal tract influences a key component of the immune system to prevent infection, offering a potential clue to the cause of autoimmune disorders like rheumatoid arthritis and multiple sclerosis.

"The findings shed light on the complex balance between beneficial and harmful bacteria in the gut," said Prof. Jennifer Gommerman, an Associate Professor in the Department of Immunology at U of T, whose findings were published online by the scientific journal, Nature. "There has been a long-standing mystery of how certain cells can differentiate between and attack harmful bacteria in the intestine without damaging beneficial bacteria and other necessary cells. Nothing personal Squiff but I didn't realize that MS had been proven to be an autoimmune disease. Despite this uncertainty, some people in the medical field are determined to fit MS into this category.

Yes, I realize that and is why I said "nothing personal". One has to report all sides to be fair.

I was just pointing out that some research articles continue to make the statement that it is a foregone conclusion of MS being an autoimmune disease. These people should know better when making these comments since like you said, the jury is still out.

It's normally not a good idea to confuse science with theory or wishful thinking, especially when it comes to talking about MS.

In the words of Bertand Russell....the fact that an opinion has been widely held is no evidence whatsoever that it is not utterly absurd: indeed, in view of the silliness of the majority of mankind, a widespread belief is more likely to be foolish than sensible.

Be very careful CV....you are treading on breaking the rules of this forum with comments like that.

If you can't debate your opinions in public or private in a civilized manner, then perhaps you shouldn't be participating here. Emphasis is placed on sharing ideas on ThisIsMS..not in trashing others. Opinions like you have expressed are likely why 70 years of research in MS haven't even been able to determine a cause for the disease let alone anything remotely resembling a decent treatment.

On the other hand, I have started many threads in support of fact the MS is autoimmune in nature. In my view I have provided a wealth of information with links to the supporting research.

What have you done?

Why don't you start a thread about how MS is not autoimmune and provide the supporting research. Maybe you could start it in the CCSVI forum. Otherwise, I have to assume you are ignorant.

You obviously aren't reading all of my posts. What I have said is that the researchers have not provided proof that MS is an autoimmune disease and it is a theory like other theories involving this disease. And it's not only me saying this but some MS researchers as well.
