Arm relaxed, muscles working
Hi all
I don't even really know how to explain this. My right arm is for all intents and purposes relaxed. Lying on the table, relaxed. But the muscles are twitching, tense, the fingers are doing these little dances like nobody's business.
What is it???
Would appreciate any help at all because I can't even google cos I don't know what to google.
Thanks heaps.

I'd still be looking at magnesium first. did you have any luck finding some? how's the dietary assessment coming?

Re: Arm relaxed, muscles working
I get twitching and tensing also. These are classic magnesium insufficiency symptoms. For me, Mg is the only thing that helps. This makes sense, considering the fact that one of Mg's many purposes is to relax muscles. Most people are low in Mg, and people with ms, even more so. And the main test for Mg has serious issues.christobelle wrote:Hi all

Re: Arm relaxed, muscles working
Hi,
I have also found magnesium helpful, especially for muscle cramping spastic pain. You also asked how to find out about this symptom. I would try tremor and also separately search fasciculation. There may be other terms I don't know, but I think one of these might get you closer to understanding.
Also, if this appeared recently and you want it to stop, you might ask your doctor about steroids. There are risks, but it may be an option for you.

Re: Arm relaxed, muscles working
Thanks everyone.
Thank you for the replies everyone.
Jimmylegs none of the stores I have been to so far have stocked the glycinate. I have upped my dietary intake though such that it "should" be sufficient, and whilst I'm probably getting too much fat (because I'm relying on cashews and almonds for a fair chunk of it) it will have to do until I can get hold of the tablets.
It's coming up for day 4 of these muscle things happening in my right arm and it is just exhausting. I want to contact my neurologist to discuss but I didn't even know what to say "My arm muscles are working but my arm isn't working" just sounded odd.
It's only my right arm doing it at this stage which at least is something I guess.
Just frustrating

heya!
boo, that's too bad :S might save time to phone around local health shops, you could ask them for suggestions for others to call.
alternative, ordering online. one option: http://au.iherb.com/kirkman-labs-magnes ... ules/43215
1 capsule = 100mg 25% of MINIMUM daily requirement. (600 is better when you're feeling low)

I like this one.
Albion Chelated TRS Magnesium
http://www.swansonvitamins.com/swanson- ... um-60-tabs
Jigsaw Magnesium is also very good, but about twice the price.
And of course there is topical magnesium which is in a whole other league. While certainly less convenient than swallowing a pill, it is far more effective - no possible GI discomfort for it does not even enter the GI tract.
Here is an example of one I use and like:

no GI discomfort from glycinate either - the only time I had any trouble with that one was with taking mag BISglycinate on an empty stomach and then going to bed. gave what the docs labeled heartburn and they tried to get me on nexium. I just had to realize that the mag was relaxing my LES, and stop taking such a powerful version of it right before bed.
off to class! getting ready to fight the power.. think I will have to take on the whole public health agenda in this course :S dare me?

What I mean is no stool softening effect. I was using the somewhat euphemistic term that I sometimes see nutrient companies use in place of "stool softening" or if one takes a lot, "Diarrhea."no GI discomfort from glycinate either
JL, are you saying that one can take lots of Mg Glycinate and not have stool softening

Re: Arm relaxed, muscles working
yes I know exactly what you meant, which is why I said 'no GI discomfort from mag glycinate either' but then had to qualify that with the issues I had actually DID have - which were certainly unrelated to the kind of trouble you'd more usually expect from an inorganic insoluble oral supplement.
i max out on glycinate long before running into the kind of GI issues you'd expect from higher doses of mag oxide or mag citrate. just once, i experimented with an extra mag glycinate pill each day, and my muscles got TOO relaxed - started to feel it as weakness. noticeable when trying to climb stairs.

Re: Arm relaxed, muscles working
The chelated magnesium makes me feel incredibly ill. Incredibly.
I actually ended up ringing the neuro this morning to get in to see him because it is day 6 and zero relief, and feels as though I have been lifting weights for days on end.
My reflexes on that side are now even brisker than they were last time I saw him so neuro wants me to get the MRI done urgently in the next few days rather than waiting the 6 weeks I have left til the scheduled one.
Looks like I'll at least have some answers (or be incredibly frustrated if I don't) next week…..

Re: Arm relaxed, muscles working
christobelle, considering that people with ms are magnesium wasters, it would make sense to work on your Mg levels. I don't think that topical Mg would make you sick. Using this type, of Mg you could get substantial amounts in your system and avoid the chelated Mg issues you experience.
Brisk reflexes can happen when the cells are low in Mg because the cells become hyper-excitable when low in Mg.
Good luck with the neurological appointment,

Re: Arm relaxed, muscles working
THX1138, what do you mean magnesium wasters?
Are there any side effects from using the topical magnesium rather than the chelated? And how does it work? Is it just absorbed into the skin and the body takes its nutrients that way? Sorry, tis all a bit new to me!
And thanks, luck is appreciated lol
