questions about cortisone shots and prednisone
I remember reading somewhere that taking prednisone alone can make a person relapse. Is this true? I thought I read that it can happen if someone doesn't do the IV steroids first.
Also is there any issues with someone getting a cortisone shot who has MS?
I have had a very persistent and painful shoulder for many years now and I have neglected it. I always stayed in the gym and never gave it time to heal. I don't know if its a small tear, tendonitis, who knows. I am going to see a specialist this Wednesday and a shot might be what he wants to do at some point. So I just wanted to know if it is something I need to avoid?
I have had 3 persistent injuries that have never gotten back to 100 percent. I injured my right elbow doing curls at the gym many years ago and it has never been the same since. I have to wear an elbow guard while working out or it gets very painful. My right wrist is the same since I tweaked it, I have to wear a wrist band when working out. The shoulder is also the right side, I don't know if they are related though... or if somehow this is related to MS? I also have a herniated disc in my c4 c5 which could be the answer.
Thanks for any insight

How are you treating your injuries now, especially your herniated discs? What has your doctor recommended aside from steroids?

Re: questions about cortisone shots and prednisone
I have not seen the doctor yet, just wanted to know if he did recommend that route if I should avoid it. I will not take prednisone either way but a shot I would consider if it had 0 chances of complications with my MS.
I did not even know I had a herniated disc, we found it when I got a MRI of my cervical spine. There were no lesions or signs of demyelination though, which is great. I have seen a chiropractor since I have been diagnosed. I get adjusted once a week along with a few other things. We have done acupuncture, massage, electric stimulation (a lot), graston technique and traction. We started doing the traction since we found the herniated disc. I get that done once a week.

Hi,
I don't think you need to worry. I used to have a very tight shoulder joint and the range I could move my left arm through was limited by the shoulder pain. Releasing it is a standard procedure; they use an x-ray machine to see where they are going and slip a needle between the ball and socket. It is a painless procedure. Then they inject sterilized water into the joint to force it open and a small amount of cortisone to soften the adhesions. Sometimes it needs a repeat visit. My suggestion after it is done is to regularly add some shoulder mobilization execises into your daily routine. Don't aim for strength and weight bearing, make it mobilization and moving the arm through a wider range. Weight bearing comes after a coupe of weeks. The success of the procedure depends how much fluid they can get in and ho long it stays in the joint. I needed two attempts spread over 12 months. Now I don't even think about it. Remember you will have been favouring the shoulder for a while and the surrounding muscles will be used to trying in to protect. Retraining will be about technique not strength. Take your time.
In my last big attack IV pred was the first thing they gave me. That went straight into my veins. It works in short doses but you cant stay on it as it attacks too broadly (hence ok for adhesions in localized area in a small dose).
Regards

Re: questions about cortisone shots and prednisone
Interesting, thank you your input scott.
I have done IV steroids three times in my life now... and well I hate it lol. I don't want anything to do with that crap or pred unless I really have a bad flare up.
That is also kinda why I can lean towards that I tore something. I did 3 day IV's and the oral pred after twice in the last year. All while not working out at the gym. I feel like if it was tendonitis it would have at least gotten a little better from all that but who knows. But then at the same time, I have full range of motion and the pain only hits when I do very specific movements with weight. It is also such a weird spot for pain its right under my trap on the inside of my shoulder.
More than anything else (like a lot of us with our MS journey) I just want to know wtf is going on over there lol. I just want the answer.

It sounds like this - http://www.health.harvard.edu/healthbea ... n-shoulder
The use of cortisone is appropriate.

Re: questions about cortisone shots and prednisone
So guy looked at me for 5 seconds and knew exactly what was going on.
I somehow slipped my clavicle out of place (my collarbone protrudes outward) and where it meets by breast plate it is digging into the joint, tendons, etc. The only thing to do is to get a very serious surgery that he was way against. He said it is not worth it. Pain management is all I need to do for it. It can not get too much better or too much worse from anything.
My main concern was that if I keep working out will it get worse but it wont. He said it will only get worse if I break something or get severe trauma to it. He also said when the same thing happens but it pokes inward that it can be life threating. It can press against your lungs and all that crap.
He actually called it "incurable" which kinda made me upset.... lol I hate that word. Chalk it up to another thing I have to deal with for the rest of my life..... ugh

Re: questions about cortisone shots and prednisone
I have already been seeing a chiropractor ever since I was diagnosed. He has done and still does many things for my shoulder along with everything else.
Re: questions about cortisone shots and prednisone
Hi,
Who did you see? The recommended treatment and the diagnosis don't quite match up. Was it a sports medicine surgeon? Good ones see some injuries that are like the sort you sustain in a car crash and they aren't phased by it. Unless your bones are suspect it doesn't sound untreatable to me. A chiropractor doesn't sound like the person you need. He wouldn't have a clue how to operate. I'd get a referral to a sports medicine surgeon.
Never believe anyone who says nothing can be done without serious checking first. We'd all be stuffed if we followed the advice we've been given.

Re: questions about cortisone shots and prednisone
He was a surgeon. He has done knee surgeries for my mother and brother in the past. The chiropractor is someone different.
He said there is a surgery but it is a very serious surgery. He was very against it and said it isn't worth it. For a surgeon to be against surgery that is enough for me to know I don't want it haha. My main concern was if I could make it worse by working out. It isn't going to get worse... or better. I can live with that. The pain is not that bad.

Glad you figured it out and that it does not seem too serious. Are you always in pain from it or does it bother you just when you work out with the weights?

Re: questions about cortisone shots and prednisone
it only hurts when I do certain movements with our without weights. I just have to be careful with the way I move my right arm around.
