Botox for vanity?
A couple of dermatologists turned me down when I told them I had ms and wanted to use Botox in my eye and forehead area--- what are your thoughts on this? My husbdbd is a veterinarian and thinks I'm insane to inject stg foreign into my body and provoke an immune response. I have done it onde before in 2009 and was in hospital 3 months later with severe nerve pain which was exercising but I don't know if that was coincidence or not? Any advice please??
Re: Botox for vanity?
Hi,
Botox is made from Clostridium botulinum which develops into a neurotoxin (there are several varieties-one type will kill you if you breathe it!).
A form called Purified botulinum toxin can be diluted and used in medicine. I currently have 200mg in my left leg and gain an enormous benefit from it. The only thing that seems to be attracted to it is my right leg. (I think they might be going out together). To the rest of the world it just helps me walk like I am an Earthling.
It is not harmless but it is purified. The way it works, therapeutically, is it destroys the ends of the dendrite attaching the neuron to the muscle. (Imagine you chopped your fingers off. Whatever they were holding would be free to float away)
When the muscle has been released it can be stretched by other associated muscles through exercise so it becomes longer. When the new dendrite grows back then you have a longer muscle and a more normal action. (see - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Botulinum_toxin )
I have no opinion on putting it in your face but it makes no sense to me. If you are doing it for cosmetic reasons then you better ask who you are doing it for. If it is for MS then it's more likely to be of benefit if it influences big muscle groups.
Regards
