Help needed to understand
Re: Help needed to understand
Hi,
You really do have it all piling on top of you!
You mentioned a deviated septum and troubles breathing in your sleep. I'd go to a ENT surgeon and get him to look straight up your nose. If the deviation is too extreme you will only be breathing through one nostril. Unfortunately that's not enough. What we normally do is switch from nostril to nostril about every 15 minutes. If can only breathe through one then the tissues in the other become inflamed and you start mouth breathing. When you sleep you end up not breathing and wake gulping for air. A septoplasty fixes it. That may solve one problem. Not the sweetest operation but it works.
You mentioned you are a vet so you may find something by looking at Martin Palls Gulf War syndrome work. I use similar things (CoQ10, aceytl-l-cartine and an antiviral, acyvlovir) with great success. ( http://www.prohealth.com/library/showar ... ibid=17947 )
I have no idea what you have but maybe that and some of JL's stuff will help.
Regards,

ok the homework is optional then ;) (should not be though!)
would be one step towards heading off that low mag that is evident from your urine test, as well as being one of the long lasting side effects of iron supplementation. not to mention that the migraine history suggests mag needs work anyway.
you might find this interesting also:
step 1: list all foods fluids meds and supplements taken in a day (3 days even better).
we already have the iron and orange juice down, so part done already ;)

i grabbed this from a related recent post (magnesium is such a ubiquitous problem it comes up a lot):Alterations in magnesium and oxidative status during chronic emotional stress.
http://europepmc.org/abstract/med/10761188
Magnesium and oxidative status were investigated in young volunteers exposed to chronic stress (political intolerance, awareness of potential military attacks, permanent stand-by duty and reduced holidays more than 10 years) or subchronic stress consisting of everyday mortal danger in military actions lasting more than 3 months. Significant decreases in plasma ionized Mg2+, total Mg and ionized Ca2+ concentrations were found in both groups. Similarly, both study groups exhibited oxidative stress as assessed by increased plasma superoxide anions and malondialdehyde and modified antioxidant defense. There were no significant differences between the two stress groups. A negative correlation between magnesium balance and oxidative stress was observed suggesting that the same etiological factor (chronic stress) initiate decreases in both free and total magnesium concentrations and simultaneously increase oxidative stress intensity. These findings support the need for magnesium supplementation with antioxidant vitamins for people living in conditions of chronic stress.
so that is your homework mission, if you choose to accept itre food. let's go through your day 1 list and see if we can suss out your approx magnesium intake.
mgs are from usda/google, with some guesswork on my part. eg i have no idea if you consumed exactly 1c of orange juice etc.
1c orange juice = 27mg
1 med slice sourdough bread = 20mg
peaches and blueberries maybe 10mg combined
85g turkey = 27mg
2 med slice sourdough = 40mg
1 oz jack cheese = 8mg
apple = 9mg
3 oz swordfish = 30mg
100g leaf lettuce = 13mg
so 57 + 84 + 43 = 184 mg of magnesium for day 1.
that is 44% of what RDIs suggest you should be getting (420mg per day)
this is a perfect example of the disconnect between public health essential nutrient recommendations, and clinical tests which use crap reference ranges so that you can be consuming less than half what you nominally should, but still have 'normal' results at the lab.
in the literature, the recommended magnesium intake range is 7-10 mg per kg body weight per day. so you can do your math there and decide if the RDIs are out to lunch in your case.
if we just take a random person who weighs 80kg that means if they are symptomatic of low mag and thinking 10mg/kg/day would be a decent therapeutic approach, then they need 800mg of magnesium per day.
so if this random hypothetical person eats the same kinds of food you do, how to hit 800 when baseline intake is under 200. best sources are healthy whole foods.
http://www.whfoods.com/genpage.php?tnam ... #foodchart
examples presented with approx mag content per serving, in increasing order by calorie content (the details are all there via the link above)
1c boiled/drained spinach or swiss chard adds ~150mg
1/4 c pumpkin seeds adds 190mg
1c black beans (soup??) adds 120mg
1/4 c cashews adds 116mg
if supplements are needed to top up, that's a different conversation. not all are created equal and some are just downright unpleasant.. esp if someone decided to go for 800mg per day all from mag oxide *shudder*
any questions, just say
step 1: list all foods fluids meds and supplements taken in a day (3 days even better).
we already have the iron and orange juice down, so part done already ;)

Re: Help needed to understand
another example. deconstructing weekday breakfast.
1/2 c. cooked steel cut oats = 70 mg
1 c. mixed berries = 25 mg (berries vary; averaged)
1 tsp. whole flax seed = 15 mg
1/2 c. 2% milk = 15 mg
1 tbsp. maple syrup = 4 mg
so basically 129 mg there.
1 tea and 2 coffees = 7 x 3 = 21 more so up to 150 mg
after that i switch to herbal tea made with tap water which is probably only about 1 mg each
now for lunch.
1.5 c. bean/veggie soup (chicken stock)
really tough call. homemade with mix of onions, celery, carrots, tomatoes, corn, spinach, lentils, and black beans. so considering a few to represent:
1/4 c. onions 6 mg
1/2 c. lentils 35 mg
1/2 c. black beans 60 mg
50 g spinach 40 mg
so another 141 mg, for a total after lunch ~ 290. better make dinner count ;) probably should grab a handful of nuts for a snack to help keep things in line

Re: Help needed to understand
well dinner was kind of a wash last eve, maybe another couple hundred mgs tops. at least i am only personally aiming for the 500s
was mostly leftover veg but i did have some mixed nuts - including cashews - to round things out!
today i skipped breakfast. time change impacts? so basically just 25mg from tea, coffee and 1 maple sugar candy up til lunch time.
then a big lunch including half a large onion & 2 large mushrooms sauteed, 1 med potato, 2 pcs sprouted rye toast, 2 eggs, 50 g spinach and two slices of cheddar.
onion 4mg, mushrooms 3mg, potato 50mg, toast 24mg, eggs 9mg, spinach 40 mg, cheese maybe 7mg?
so that only added ~140mg meaning i'm sitting at 165mg so far today.
will have to have soup next, for another 140, *plus* a better dinner and some nuts/seeds to crack the 500 zone
