post-surgery hair loss?

Post by Arcee »

Not such a big deal, especially compared to Lew's rash, but anyone else on Coumadin and Plavix noticing that their hair is coming out? I am definitely shedding way more than normal. It's not clumps (at least not yet), and I think it is a not uncommon side effect, but am wondering if anyone else has experienced this or has comments. Thanks.

I have that problem at the moment but have not had the CCSVI surgery.
I am thinking it is either A.my thyroid, B. lack of iron, C.raised liver enzymes or D. not eating enough fats. (still trying to work out for me which one it is)

hallo,
-alopecia is a known side effect of anticoagulant therapy including warfarin (coumadin)
(aside: warfarin thins blood via vitamin k antagonism; vitamin e is also a vitamin k antagonist; magnesium helps thin your blood too)

-warfarin increases iron requirement
http://content.karger.com/ProdukteDB/pr ... /000228074

-low iron is associated with alopecia
http://www.nature.com/jid/journal/v121/ ... 2007a.html
Decreased Serum Ferritin is Associated With Alopecia in Women
the mean ferritin level (ng per ml [95% confidence intervals]) in patients with androgenetic alopecia (37.3 [28.4, 46.1]) and alopecia areata (24.9 [17.2, 32.6]) were statistically significantly lower than in normals without hair loss (59.5 [40.8, 78.1])

-worried about supplementing iron in ms? make sure your zinc is optimal (18.2 umol/L), not low or deficient like many ms patients.
http://www.jbc.org/cgi/content/full/283/8/5168
Zinc Deficiency-induced Iron Accumulation, a Consequence of Alterations in Iron Regulatory Protein-binding Activity, Iron Transporters, and Iron Storage Proteins

-are there more benefits to zinc optimization in ms? yes there are - you can watch your serum uric acid bump up to optimal too. this effect is supported in the literature, and personally i have been watching it happen with my own bloodwork. i have also observed drastically increased response to d3 supplementation.

FYI, and HTH,
JL

Thanks! Very helpful. Have been meaning to bump up the iron so now seems like a good time.
