Association between Short-Term Exposure to Ozone and Heart Rate Variability: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/36141453/

Abstract

At present, ambient air pollution poses a significant threat to patients with cardiovascular disease (CVD). The heart rate variability (HRV) is a marker of the cardiac autonomic nervous system, and it is related to air pollution and cardiovascular disease. There is, however, considerable disagreement in the literature regarding the association between ozone (O3) and HRV ...

Heart rate variability analysis in patients with multiple sclerosis
https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/29957350/

Abstract

Background: Multiple sclerosis can cause cardiovascular autonomic dysfunction. It is assumed that is caused by multiple demyelinating plaques localized in the brain stem and spinal cord. Previous studies have determined this using tilt table test, heart rate responses to Valsalva maneuver and deep breathing and heart rate variability analysis with 24 h Holter monitoring. However there is not a consensus regarding the presence of the relationship between autonomic dysfunction and severity of multiple sclerosis, type of multiple sclerosis and expanded disability status scale. The aim of the study is comparison of heart rate variability between recently diagnosed patients with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis and healthy controls by using 24 h Holter monitoring. Also we intended to investigate relationship between Expanded Disability Status Scale score, Multiple Sclerosis Functional Composite scores and cranial and spinal magnetic resonance imaging findings and hearth rate variability...

Evidence of air pollution-related ocular signs and altered inflammatory cytokine profile of the ocular surface in Beijing
https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-022-23294-7

Abstract

We evaluated how different degrees of air pollution affect the ocular surface of a cohort of human subjects in Beijing by correlating in-patient test outcomes with tear cytokines. A cross-sectional study involving 221 volunteers was carried out in different districts of Beijing. Air pollution indices were recorded for 7 d (including the visit day). The indices recorded were the air quality index (AQI), which is a dimensionless measure that quantitatively describes the state of air quality, concentrations of particulate matter smaller than 2.5 μm (PM2.5) and 10 μm (PM10), sulfur dioxide (SO2), ozone (O3), and nitrogen dioxide (NO2)...

-------------------------------------------------
This study is the first many-sided study of the effects of air pollution on ocular surface-related inflammation, symptoms and signs.

Numerous studies both in vivo and in vitro have demonstrated the upregulation of cytokines on the ocular surface after exposure to air pollution.

found that human corneal and conjunctival epithelial cells incubated with diesel exhaust particles showed cytotoxicity and an inflammatory response mediated by the cytokine IL-6

Activation of inflammatory pathways and oxidative stress are considered potential mechanisms involved in the pathogenesis of ocular surface diseases after air pollution exposure

The IL-6 concentration was positively correlated with the AQI, PM2.5, PM10 and NO 2 concentrations and negatively correlated with the concentrations of O 3

Goblet-cell density was positively correlated with AQI, PM2.5, PM10 and NO2 concentrations and negatively correlated with O 3 concentrations.

A significant difference in the concentrations of inflammatory cytokines between the two groups was observed, also demonstrating that increasing air pollution degrees can cause ocular inflammatory reactions, which leads to significantly elevated tear cytokines.

Lee (52) reported increased concentrations of IL-1β, IL-6, IL-17, and interferon gamma in a murine model exposed to ozone chambers for one or two weeks.

Ozone-induced alterations in glutathione in lung subcompartments of rats and monkeys.
https://www.atsjournals.org/doi/abs/10. ... ode=ajrcmb

Abstract

The current studies were designed to test two hypotheses: (1) differences in steady-state reduced glutathione levels are responsible for subcompartment differences in susceptibility to acute ozone injury, and (2) elevation of reduced glutathione concentrations accounts for the tolerance to further injury produced by repeated ozone exposure. Glutathione was measured in well-defined subcompartments of the lung of both rats and monkeys to compare alterations occurring in both target....

Glutathione in multiple sclerosis: more than just an antioxidant?
https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/24842957/

Abstract

Oxidative stress has been strongly implicated in both the inflammatory and neurodegenerative pathological mechanisms in multiple sclerosis (MS). In response to oxidative stress, cells increase and activate their cellular antioxidant mechanisms. Glutathione (GSH) is the major antioxidant in the brain, and as such plays a pivotal role in the detoxification of reactive oxidants. Previous research has shown that GSH homeostasis is altered in MS. In this review, we provide a comprehensive overview on GSH metabolism in brain cells, with a focus on its involvement in MS. The potential of GSH as an in vivo biomarker in MS is discussed, along with a short overview of improvements in imaging methods that allow non-invasive quantification of GSH in the brain..

Association of Air Pollution and Blood-Based Biomarkers of Brain Degeneration
http://d-scholarship.pitt.edu/42900/

Introduction: Air pollution contributes to poorer brain health and Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) incidence although the biological mechanisms remain unclear. The aim of these analyses is to evaluate the association between air pollutants (Particulate Matter (PM10), Ozone (O3,),...

Conclusion: In adults aged 65 and older, long term air pollutant exposure was significantly associated with higher levels of degeneration biomarkers. The association may provide evidence that AD may be in the early stages, as higher levels of NfL precede the first clinical manifestations of AD, and GFAP has been associated with AD pathology. Further research could raise awareness on AD and the current public health relevance of air pollution and its disproportional health disparities from exposure.
