Children Diagnosed With MS On Rise

Post by scorpion »

This breaks my heart to read. Are there more children being diagnosed because there is an increase in MS in that age group or, due to population growth, just more children OR is it being identified earlier??? Maybe all three??? errrrrrr

OR MORE CHILDREN ARE BEING MISDIAGNOSED. Lyme disease is an epidemic that doctors are completely ignoring. It's really sad.

No surprise really. For the last 20 years parents have been told that allowing any sunlight to touch your child is effectively abuse. Watch the parents smother their kids in factor 50 suntan lotion from April to October. Add to that hyper clean environments with kids spending longer indoors on the Play station rather than playing in the woods or garden

Here in the UK Rickets is making a return - no surprise MS is on the up in kids too.

Interesting study at University of Buffalo on childhood obesity and demylinating disorders.
http://www.buffalo.edu/news/12559
Although obesity has been linked to heart disease and diabetes, among other illnesses, little is known about its relationship to inflammatory demyelinating disorders.

"Increasing rates of childhood obesity have been reported widely in the media and in medical journals," says Yeh, "but no information is available on the relationship between obesity and childhood-onset demyelinating disorders."

Subjects in the current study were patients of UB's Pediatric MS and Demyelinating Disorders Center of Excellence at Women and Children's Hospital of Buffalo. Data were collected prospectively between January 2003 and October 2010 in patients under the age of 18.

Results showed that rates of overweight and obese children were greater in the demyelinating groups than in the control group, and that boys in the demyelinating groups were twice as likely as girls to have a BMI in the 95th percentile or greater.

"These findings underscore the need for attention to the nutritional and physical needs of children with these disorders," states Yeh. "Comprehensive programs oriented toward the prevention of obesity in all children are needed, but we also need further studies to help define the relationship between obesity and risk for demyelinating disorders."

That is interesting. So maybe Colin Rose is on to something about obesity causing a myriad of diseases?? That said I am trying to shed a few pounds myself!

Jeff's down to his college weight, at 180 and 6'2" he's never felt better, looks great and MS is still in remission...could be a correlation, but of course, it's all anecdotal.
Dr. Roy Swank, Dr. George Jelinek, and Dr. Terry Wahls would all concur--nutrition and MS are related.
Childhood obesity is a real and serious problem.

Kind of reminds me of an old punk song I used to listen to in my younger years that went something like:
I'm not anti-government the governments anti-me,
I'm not anti-religion religions anti-me...
Darn its been so long that is about all I can remember! I guess in this case it would go something like:

I'm not anti-CCSVI CCSVI is anti-me???

Ok going to look and see if I can find my old cassette tape with that song on! It is driving me crazy that I can not think who wrote it.

Hey Cheer,

I agree that since I have lost some weight I am feeling better overall as well. I believe the reason for the appeal of the Swank diet and others like it(i.e. the articulate Dr. Embry's diet) for us (PWMS) is that they give us a feeling of control in dealing with this disease. I am certainly not saying that eating healthy and exercise are not important to feeling better for PWMS, just that in all likelihood they do not slow down disease progression/ relapse rate like Swank and Embry want us to believe. As people that have followed MS research for awhile know the "new" ideas that catch on are the one's that give us a feeling of control and seem to be an "easy fix" (diet, supplements, liberation, etc.) I have pretty much accepted that finding a cure for MS is still going to be a long and grueling road for researchers and at this point I know that there is not a whole hell of a lot I can do to slow the progression of MS although I do feel pretty hopeful after reading some of the results of the Campath trials(and other treatments in the pipeline) that MAYBE some of us can hope, in our lifetime, to stop this disease in a tracks. Whether I will be fortunate enough to experience th in my lifetime is something I hope for but do not count on so I will try to continue to adapt, accept and smile. Wonder if I can market those things???? Oh by the way the band I referenced above is the Suicidal Tendencies for those of you waiting on the edge of your seats for my follow-up. :D

I believe the song you're looking for is by Suicidal Tendencies, and it's called "Two Sided Politics."
