I sent him the beginnings of my aldosterone research earlier this month warning that I would be requesting a prescription for eplerenone in January. I just got a letter from him saying he would be pleased to prescribe it for me and outlined a schedule for monitoring potassium.

OMG! I got it!!

Good for you! Has he prescribed it before? Or what made him agree, was it solely your research?

I don't know! I half expect him to have the men in white coats waiting for me at my January appt. I'm so shocked and excited.

How is aldosterone linked to high blood pressure?

The reason I'm asking is that my blood pressure tends to go up at night before I go to bed. During the early part of my day it's fine. My doctor wanted me to go on the beta blocker carvedilol, but I didn't like what I read about its side effects. I'm considering alternatives.

I've never been diagnosed with high blood pressure. Aldosterone can cause high blood pressure by influencing the amount of fluid in your circulatory system and by acting as a vasoconstrictor. It's interesting that your blood pressure goes up at night before you go to bed as aldosterone has a circadian rhythm and it's peak activity in normal folks starts at night when you go to sleep. Maybe yours gets an early start...or maybe you are staying up too late and sleep walking.

If you give eplerenone a shot, we'll make a whole two person "study!"

I doubt that I would be compatible with taking a diuretic.
