Everyone, get off any of the PPI's if you are taking them. My gastroenterologist had me taking two a day for seven years, prilosec and then prevacid for acid reflux and the resulting barret's esophagus the reflux caused.
Shortly after DX's of MS, I broke my back in the act of doing practically nothing. Dr's dismissed broken back, assuming that I was doing something stupid at the time and was not disclosing the truth. I assure you that I have done many stupid things in my life that could have resulted in broken bones, but not in this instance. After that incident I made the discovery of some issues with PPI's and loss of bone density. I began searching for the real cause of my reflux which turned out to be a high sensitivity to all dairy, I can not ingest any dairy without my reflux returning. Once the dairy was out of my diet, bye bye PPI's. Last scope showed so much improvement of the esophagus that the Dr. said I did not have to come back for five years. It was not until after the procedure and after he gave me the results of the latest scope that I told him I was no longer taking the PPI's and had figured out what the problem was myself. I wish I could show you guys a picture of his face at that moment. I would caption it with a big bubble above it saying "What? I've lost another patient! Let's see, what else can I say is wrong with them in order to prescribe another drug and keep them coming back for more?"
I am awaiting bloodwork to check magnesium levels now. Although I have been taking magnesium supplement, I don't think it was enough. But we'll soon find out.

here is my GERD story in brief - still a problem with the LES, but from too much magnesium (relaxation=poor seal) as opposed to too little (spasticity=poor seal)

I remember reading about meds for acid reflux and thinking no, you NEED that acid to get the nutrients properly. so I didn't take them. thank goodness. much better to have figured out WHY the sphincter was dysfunctional.

we were recently discussing zinc absorption in the context of low stomach acid and I notice omeprazole came into the conversation then too, although it wasn't the main focus. still interesting:

Never had fractures before in my life until last year and I used to ride horses. Fell of I would guess over 100 times, skittish horses. Fell in Jan and broke two fingers, Dec comp fracture of L2, and now a routine chest x-ray showed possible wedge fracture in thoracic vertebrae. MRI of spine tomorrow will tell. No symptoms of thoracic fracture at least. Still recovering from L2 fracture.
