If it's on your mind and it has to do with multiple sclerosis in any way, post it here.

natural hormone cream

Post by victoriagrace1 »

Hi, I'm going through the menopause and the symptoms really make my ms worse, I'm thinking of taking natural hormone cream but would like to hear from anyone who is taking the natural hormone cream and which cream they take before I decided which one to buy.
thanks Sue

Hi Sue

I was diagnosed after they took me off HRT during the big "scare" years (over 10 years ago) so I too am of the impression menopause made my symptoms worse.

If it's at all possible I would recommend that you have your "free" hormone levels tested (estradiol, progesterone, DHEA, testosterone, cortisol) before you start supplementing and go from there. Many tests don't assess "free" hormone levels and I think that's important so you know what's available (not bound to blood) to potentially assist your brain/spinal cord for neuroprotection/remyelination.

If you don't want to go that route, I'd recommend "Pro-Gest" by Emerita. It's an over the counter progesterone cream. I am on 8mg/estriol and 500 mg progesterone cream, both compounded, based on the results of my hormone testing. So far, so good. :-D

I've posted quite a bit about progesterone so if you search you should be able to find some research about it's potential.

All the best to you

Hi Sharon,
Thanks for advice, I will get a hormone test, I live in france its like england you can't buy it over the counter, I have hear of Pro-gest before so will have a look at ordering it from the internet, I think in America you are more forward thinking than France or England both with the menopause and MS, your MS forum's are so much more positive than the English sites.
thanks again Sue

Hi Sue

Hopefully you'll have some luck getting Pro-Gest. I'm not so sure we're more forward thinking than France or England about menopause, although I certainly don't know.

I've read that estriol is prescribed in Europe for menopause, and it's not generally prescribed here. And, some of the lead researchers with respect to progesterone are from France. Here's one of their latest articles:

Progesterone Synthesis in the Nervous System: Implications for Myelin Formation and Myelin Repair

This is a quote from the abstract but the full article is available at the link.
Stimulating the formation of endogenous progesterone is currently explored as an alternative strategy for neuroprotection, axonal regeneration, and myelin repair.
You'll see they note the difficulty in "delivery" and my own experience was that progesterone capsules did not raise my progesterone levels, but progesterone cream did. It also took about 2 months after I started the cream before I noticed an improvement in my gait.

Interestingly, our ability to remyelinate apparently declines with age (it also declines in MS but I have no idea if that's related to age, although disease progression seems to be) Steroids and the Reversal of Age Associated Changes in Myelination and Remyelination

All the best to you....and do hope you're successful getting the hormone testing. It's a complicated dance these hormones do.
