This is the place to ask questions if you have symptoms that suggest MS, but aren't yet diagnosed.

Frustrating.. new symptoms

Post by breeisreallyawesome »

For those of you following, my symptoms that I mainly struggle with (eye sight blurring or darkening for short spans, tingling in extremities, numbness in extremities, loss of hand coordination [ie: dropping things, random spastic movements], falling a LOT more than normal even when no symptoms might be present, an almost constant brain fog, and definite mood changes) came on all of a sudden. I had an EMG that came up normal. They also did an MRI of my brain and C spine that showed herniation of disks C2-C4 but showed no damage to the spinal cord and also had some lesions on my brain, but they weren't consistent with MS. They said the lesions are not in the areas that would cause symptoms like these and are most likely harmless.

They also ran a Sed rate and CRP level on me, both of which came back abnormal. (Sed rate was at 32, CRP was at a 27.7)

I'm in the process of getting in with another doctor to redo the blood work because that was last taken in March. But these new symptoms have come up almost out of nowhere. Swelling and pain in the limbs has become almost a constant problem in both of my legs. My thighs and knees are swollen and hurt to move and just about give away if I walk more than 5 feet (I've been doing a lot of falling and catching myself within the past couple of days). Bruising from my falls are staying around for a long amount of time (more than a month; and they knot up under the skin). I've also had bouts of uncontrollable laughter and crying.
Also, in a course of about two weeks, I gained 20 pounds. No diet change whatsoever and I'd remained constant at my weight before this bout of weight gain, though I'd been trying to lose and haven't successfully dipped below that weight plateau (160 pounds.. now 180). I've tried to up my exercise, but this has made walking even more difficult and I can't seem to do much of anything without falling or hurting myself when trying to even walk in my house, let alone trying to exercise.
This is just so frustrating. I have no idea what's going on with my body and it's just so confusing. Any suggestions? I'm going to ask my new doctor to fit me for a cane with an arm brace or something at my next appointment for when my legs do things like this. Mobility at this point is a real struggle for me. I'm only 23. I shouldn't be having mobility issues. I'm beyond frustrated and tired of my body doing these things.

Of course, we are following your postings. We can certainly understand your frustration.

Your doctors seem to have focused exclusively on neurological testing: EMG, MRI – WITHOUT focusing on your symptoms, which could have many NON-neurological causes. Was the "fasting serum insulin test" ordered as you indicated in April? Did your doctors rule out a possible vitamin B12 deficiency? I think you are wise to start again with another doctor, bloodwork, etc. Prepare for your first appointment by compiling a list of all your symptoms and the dates or order in which they appeared.

I think your weight gain with no change in diet is very significant. Since a person cannot gain weight without an increase in insulin (which is made in the pancreas), AND since enzymes (also made in the pancreas) are involved in the absorption of vitamin B12 – your symptoms are consistent with a B12 deficiency, I think it is important for your new doctor to investigate a possible problem in your pancreas. Ask him to start with B12 testing (initially with 4 tests: #1 serum B12 test, #2 serum folic acid test, #3 serum homocysteine test, and #4 either a serum or urinary methylmalonic acid test) and the serum insulin test. Ask for your own copy of the test results!

If you have developed new symptoms recently you might ask your self what have you done different lately. The symptoms will be the result of toxins in the body. Have you had dental work done, have you had vaccinations, have you changed your diet, have you changed the environment you are living in, are you taking drugs. You have accumulated too many toxins in your body and they are making you sick. The reason you have gained weight is that is the body's mechanism to protect you. These toxins get stored in the fat. You can't lose weight if you are toxic. Try going on a diet of raw fruits and vegetables and your body will detoxify itself and you will get better. Dr. Bergman has the solution.
