Any break in the blood brain barrier starts complement activation.
It's an inflammatory response, and not unique to MS.
This study found elevated levels of complement C3 in CSF.

We see the exact same response in ischemic stroke and acute brain injury.

It's yet another connection to the vascular system in MS. The worse the hypoxic injury and breakdown of BBB, the more C3 in CSF, the worse MS disability and progression were.

Seriously...when are vascular researchers and neuroimmunologists going to start talking to each other?
