Hello Everyone,
My MS was diagnosed a number of years after my car was rear ended at a fairly bigh speed resulting in whiplash which wasn't treated (and my neck has never been the same since).
I've read about the FONAR upright MRI study that found cerebrospinal fluid blockages in MS patients:
http://www.fonar.com/news/100511.htm
I'm wondering if this is my issue. And that brings me to the question, if that is my issue, would CCSVI angioplasty help this issue? In reading the Fonar study, it seems like the blockage of Cerebral Spinal Fluid (CSF) is in the spinal cord itself, not a blockage of the Internal Jugular Veins.
I'm convinced that CCSVI is valid and works well for many people with MS, but also clearly not for all.
My QUESTION is:
Is there anyone here who had a whiplash injury (or a similar kind of neck trauma) prior to being diagnosed with MS, who went on to have angioplasty CCSVI treatment and found it to be beneficial?
I guess I should also ask if anyone with a whiplash medical history had CCSVI Treatment and found that it didn't help.
CCSVI treatment for MS after whiplash: Positive results?

Hi Thisis...
Your question is very, very important. Sharon would be the expert in this area, and I hope she checks in! There have been many treated for CCSVI who had good results, but found even better relief after having atlas adjustments. The drainage of CSF can be affected by many things--venous malformations, spinal issues, even sleep! Some people had injury from trauma, others had misaligned atlases, and this approach has helped them.
Upright MRI is the only way to see how the way we spend over half our life (upright) is impacting CSF, blood flow, and the position of the brain stem. Dr. Rosa is really on to something!

Just released - authored by Dr Francis Smith, renown MRI specialist, a new textbook titled "The Craniocervical Syndrome and MRI". Dr Scott Rosa's chapter details his observations at the craniocervical junction. Important new information for those with neurodegenerative disease.
Abstract
The craniocervical junction is the most complex area of the spinal axis. Due to its complexity it is extremely vulnerable to injuries to the soft tissue stabilizing ligaments and membranous structures. Proper imaging in this area is an essential key to proper diagnosis directing towards the most appropriate and safe treatment options when injury occurs. Misalignments of C0-C1, C1-C2 brought on by head or neck trauma can manifest in different outcomes. Some of those outcomes can affect or cause neural compromise, and/or some may contribute to cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) flow obstruction as well as arteriovenous compromise. C1 misalignment may also contribute to distention of the cerebellar tonsils (cerebellar tonsillar ectopia), i.e. down through the foramen magnum due to caudal tension by way of dentate ligament pathological stress on the spinal cord leading to obstruction of the normal flow of CSF. Mechanical compression of the jugular vein by the transverse process of C1 has been found to lead to obstruction of outgoing venous blood flow. Such obstruction has been found in chronic cerebral spinal venous insufficiency which has been observed in neurodegenerative brain diseases such as multiple sclerosis. Image-Guided Atlas TreatmentTM (IGATTM) has been shown to be a method of gentle correction of misalignment of C0-C1, C1-C2, resulting in improved CSF flow as well as venous outflow. Image-guided atlas treatment utilizes advanced dynamic upright MRI as the means of evaluating misalignments at the craniocervical junction, and the images obtained are used to calculate the appropriate alignment vectors to correct the misalignment. Post-correction advanced upright MRI images are then used to validate the appropriate realignment of C0-C1, C1-C2 to establish improvement in proper CSF as well as arteriovenous flow.

Re: CCSVI treatment for MS after whiplash: Positive results?
Thanks Cheer for confirming that this is something I should read up more about and consider finding a treatment for! I hope Sharon does reply.
In particular I'm wondering where I could get "guided atlas adjustment" treatment or something like it done. Is there anyone in the Pacific Northwest who is doing this? And what is the cost?
I can imagine that insurance doesn't cover it since its a new protocol. And getting imaged in an upright MRI must be very expensive. If so, I don't have the resources to pay for it without taking drastic action like selling my house. And with my luck I'd sell my house, get the treatment but it wouldn't work, and then I'd have so place to live and also be sick! LOL!!!
I'd still love to hear any CCSVI or other treatment) success (or lack of success0 stories from people whose MS was preceded by whiplash or similar neck trauma.
I've had two whiplash accidents and one experience of being knocked off my feet while running at high speed and landing on the side of my head in soft dirt, knocking me unconscious (very briefly I think). That last incident had to do with my incredibly wonderful, fast agility dog bursting out of a tunnel at an indoor arena at the same instant that I was running at full speed past the tunnel (she was faster than I had calculated, oops!). So she accidentally slammed into me causing me to go flying and land on the side of my head.
Ah those were the days! (When I still COULD run)!!!
Fortunately my dog (who is now long since gone from old age) was not hurt...

Whiplash - MS - CCSVI treatment...
To answer your questions ThisIs....:
At this time, Dr Rosa and a few AO doctors trained by him, are the only ones using the IGAT (image guided atlas treatment) because it is a patented protocol of Dr Rosa's. He is using the Fonar Upright MRI with specially designed software to look at the cranio-cervical junction and brain pathologies and the x-ray to determine vector coordinates for alignment. (other AO doctors use only the x-ray) The cine (video) images from the upright MRI show mal-distribution of CSF caused by cerebellar tonsillar ectopia, and boney structure anomolies. Arterial venous flow can be obstructed due to C-1 and C-2 impingements, and/or muscular impingements caused by a mis-aligned Atlas. I have seen some of Dr. Rosa's pre and post AO treatment images and the flow analysis of CSF and arterial/venous blood. The changes can be dramatic and improvements for some are noticed within a 24 hour period. (my personal history, I had the CCSVI procedure in June 2009 --I see a AO doctor here in Denver).
I would suggest you look for a licensed AO doctor in your area - get x-rays taken and ask your doctor to request a consultation with Dr. Rosa. Whiplash injury is a specialty of Dr. Rosa...he is working with the prestigious Karolinska Institute in Sweden. Here is a link to his original study

It sounds as if you have already reviewed the study of 8 MS patients by Fonar (Dr. Damadian) so you know there can be a link for some people between strutural integrity at the cranio cervical junction and multiple sclerosis.
CCSVI Alliance will be launching a new video in the next few weeks. It is an extensive interview with Dr. Rosa covering a multitude of topics which I think will be of interest to anyone with a neurological disease or traumatic brain injury.
Please feel free to send me a private message
Good luck to you!
Sharon

Re: CCSVI treatment for MS after whiplash: Positive results?
you must have read many of my posts on this subject.
There have been injury lawsuits WON and LOST in regard to the question of whether or not traumatic injuries triggered MS .
MrSuccess has suggested that the answer to this puzzle can be solved best by having the general practicional doctors research their patients medical files to see if anyone with a fresh diagnosis of MS ........ had a previous traumatic injury to their head/neck/back.
MrSuccess would suggest that the MS Society's should fund this research . It is another BIG rock to look under. Why not spend money on this ? The MS Society's fund an amazing amount research $$$$$ in every idea under the sun.
Understand this. People reading this cannot see the connection , if they have MS and have never suffered a traumatic head/neck/back injury.
But 5 % of the MS population have. And if and when my suggestion is acted upon ...... the numbers will rise.
For the record ..... MrSuccess is 100% convinced that there is a connection.
And Dr.Zamboni's great discovery will result in better health care options.
Happy Cinco de Mayo !
Time for a nice cold Margaurita ! OLAY !
