medications to help diagnose?

I'm just curious if anyone knows or has had experience with being prescribed medications to help with the diagnostic process?

If I take a certain medication and it helps symptoms then can that help doctors rule things our or lead them to answers?

I've been to several more specialists and they keep saying they don't know why I'm having my symptoms... the latest doctor, a psychiatrist/pain specialist, told me to try Gabapentin for a month to see how that goes and then come back in a month...

I feel like they are giving up on tests for now and are running out of other options to figure out answers...
