Lowered pain threshold a symptom?
I used to be able to practically lop off a finger and barely notice. Lately, if I bump my finger (for instance, have an impact sprinkler thunk my index finger as I try to adjust it while it's spraying) it hurts like the dickens. What gives? Is hypersensitivity to pain an ms thing?
Re: Lowered pain threshold a symptom?
Hi,
Is it mainly the fingertips?

Re: Lowered pain threshold a symptom?
Hey there. No, it's mostly on the non-fleshy parts of my hands...well, that's where it hurts most often as I'm used to being careless with them.
I think it's elsewhere too though because every time I rough house with my son I get hurt within seconds and have to stop to lick my wounds. It hurts more when my dogs scratch my legs too.
I did get a chance to google a bit and found a study released in April 2015 methinks saying ms does lower pain threshold but I don't think it was referring to short term minor injury related pain.
I should probably research some of the herbals I'm taking but I'm so close to the finish line on my project, I can't make myself stop yet.
How you doing?

Hi,
Not bad thanks.
I stared at my hands for a while trying to work out which are the non fleshy parts. I guess you mean along the fingers and the backs of the hands. Is that right?
The reason I asked about the fingertips is they were the really sore spots when I had my acute flare up and they were pretty sore when I had the elevated blood pressure problem. I still have an altered sensation in some of them. It can shift in intensity and sometimes some fingers are ok and other times they are not. I'd call them sore but its not really the right word. I think it comes from the nerves that originate in the middle of the back and come down the arms. Massaging my back does help the fingers.
I still have residual tightness in my left leg. The thinking is they will botox it to kill the ends of the neurons and if I continue to exercise while that happens I should move the whole limb more normally. My aim is to be able to swim safely in the open ocean if I want to. I'll get there.
Do you check your blood pressure often? The Baclofen brought my down and I feel pretty normal now.
Regards

Re: Lowered pain threshold a symptom?
Yep, the backs and sides of my hands and fingers. I just had another episode @ the store trying to playfully wap my teenage son across the belly...I accidentally hit his belt and turned into a whiny "ow ow oooowww!" baby. My son thinks it's nerves growing back. I think not as I've always been a rough and tumble tomboy and things never hurt like that.
I only measure bp at doc. It's always just a smidge high as I'm a doctor phobic. When I took clonidine to stop the inflammatory cascade, it got to a point at which even the smallest dose made my blood pressure go too low so I don't think high blood pressure is an issue for me.
I've had some random stinging in the same parts of my hands and calves (add icy hot and sparkle sensations to the legs) too. I think it's from weeds I've been pulling though. Will know soon as I finally finished the backyard landscape overhaul (YAY!!) and I shouldn't be rolling in weeds for a week or so (lots more to do in yard).
I'm glad you've recovered most of what you'd lost and hope you're back in the ocean soon. I miss the ocean. Might have to take a trip back soon.
Be well.

Hi,
The back of the implies the radial nerve is affected. The side of the hand implies the ulnar nerve (if its little finger side). The fingers are affected by either those nerves or the median nerve. They would be the main ones. It's possible you may have an impingement that's trapping more than one of them. If you google the affected nerve plus "exercise" you should get a whole lot of videos of simple releases.
The other thing I'd try is a good pressure point massage. Sometime its not a tertiary trained practioner who does the best job there. It's all in the hands. Shiatsu massage is a good example. I've found they help a lot.
See you in the ocean.
