Now what?

This is the place to ask questions if you have symptoms that suggest MS, but aren't yet diagnosed.

Now what?

Post by Donnajcooking »

Thirteen weeks ago I had a sudden onset of neurological issues. Woke up one day and both arms were numb. Other symptoms have included right sided weakness, numbness and tingling, blurry vision, muscle cramps/spasms, forgetting words, vibrating feeling in legs, burning and freezing skin.
Had an MRI w/and without contrast. MRI showed several tiny multi foci lesions in the subcortex and periventrical area favoring the frontal lobe. Report said they were non-specific and not typical of MS. Had a NVC/ EMG that was normal. Went to neuro today and he said he has no idea what is causing this but it's not coming from my nervous system. He says my MRI is normalShrugged his shoulders and then suggested maybe I have a mood disorder. What??? ( I don't have a mood disorder nor do I have anxiety. I waited six weeks to even go to the doctor). What do I do now? Seriously....I missed work because of this! There was a period of time I couldn't blow dry my hair because my arm was too weak. Just live with it I guess?...

Help!

Hi,

What you do now is investigate. It may have been a transitory issue but you need to practically eliminate the possibilities.
You have had MRI's already. Now do blood tests and look for markers of inflammation such as infection and vitamin deficiencies. Look also for amino acid deficiencies as they can indicate problems.
Most good doctors either have a battery of tests they arrange to be tested for or they can send you to clinics that specialise in whole body assessments.
Many health issues start as vague and obscure symptoms. Start investigating now.
You may have had a temporary nerve related issue. Go to a good massage place and get them to look for residual tightness.
Come back here if you find something.

Why not seek out help from another doctor to try and find out what is ailing you. My first neuro misdiagnosed me.

Hope you feel better soon.

Did you ever get your vitamin B12 levels checked? A B12 deficiency can cause a number of neurological symptoms, such as muscle weakness, that can mimic MS and other diseases.

As I wrote in your "Newbie in limbo land" thread:

In fact when this first started my first thought was that I had overdosed on Vit D because I take so much. I have D tested regularly with a nutritionist and it's always good. I eat gluten/dairy free so take lots of supplements. I wish it was a vit def but don't think it is :(
One would assume your Vit D level would be good, too. However, there is no correlation between the daily dose of D3 a person takes and the circulating serum level… Some people are efficient at metabolizing D3; others are not. (By the way, it is virtually IMPOSSIBLE to overdose on vitamin D.)

It would still be a good idea to call your nutritionist and request copies of your vitamin D (a.k.a. 25-hydroxy D) tests results. When you get the actual numbers, compare them to the recommendations by the GrassrootsHealth organization (http://www.GrassrootsHealth.net).

Although I don't have the details, your gluten-free, dairy-free diet is a good idea, in my opinion. And certainly, normal BP and normal blood sugar are very good to have. Again in my opinion, doctors have demonized cholesterol levels. Cholesterol is NECESSARY for maintaining the myelin on nerves. (And necessary for making vitamin D.) I'm glad to hear you're not on cholesterol meds.

As you think, your symptoms may NOT stem from a vitamin deficiency – but I think it is important to be CERTAIN, before moving on to the myriad of other possible causes to be investigated.
By this time, I hope you have obtained your vitamin D test result numbers. I have seen the recommendation of a serum vitamin D level of 80-100 ng/mL for people with neurological symptoms. How does your level compare?

By the way, 6000 IU per day is no longer considered a high dose – this is not "so much." See the Coimbra High-Dose Vitamin D Protocol sub forum here at TIMS. http://www.thisisms.com/forum/coimbra-h ... tocol-f57/
