Ponder This......(MRI)

If it's on your mind and it has to do with multiple sclerosis in any way, post it here.

Ponder This......(MRI)

Post by Bubba »

I have had vertigo bad all day. The last time I was like this was after an MRI. I had an MRI two days ago, vertigo today. Now, I aint smart by no means, but I have a little common sense, wich got me to thinkin....
The MRI, uses sounds to make (something) dance and/or bounce around and the magnet to pull it into picture view, I think. What do you all think about this (my) theory....
Is it possible, that the sound bounces things around a little too much? Possibly aggrivating things (for lack of a better word) in our bodies to possibly stir up a flare up?
I dunno, just wonderinng.... :?

Huh....

I'm going for an MRI tomorow. I'll pay close attention to how I feel tomorow evening and the next couple of days.

I lose my balance and stumble around quite a bit, but I've been quite steady for the last 4 or 5 days. If I get to wobbling around right after the MRI, you may be onto something.

Did they use gadolinum dye? That goes straight into your blood stream and probably to your body is seen as a toxin. If there are blood flow issues then this probably would stick around longer than it should.

MRI: Magnetic Resonance Imaging

Here are some notes on MRI that I obtained a little while back from a neurologist's presentation at a Biogen sponsored talk...
MRI: uses electro magnetic pulse (EMP) energy, measures the return energy from protons in the body’s tissues
T1 image, 20 ms sample after the initial EMP
H2O appears black

T2 image, 200 ms sample after initial EMP
H2O appears white
white = lesions
The sound you hear when getting an MRI is just the sound of the machine running. The sound itself is not actually used in the imaging process. However, I believe that each pulse of sound does correspond to a pulse of the magnet which is exposing you to a strong EMP field.

I agree that any side effects you are experiencing after an MRI could be due to the contrast agent gadolinium. The kidneys process and remove gadolinium (which is a metal) from the blood so it's usually recommended to drink plenty of water after an MRI with contrast. With this in mind, one of your recent posts mentioned that you like to stay deliberately dehydrated to help with bladder issues. If you're still following this regimen after your MRI then you might want to consider that it could be contributing to your problems. I would try staying well hydrated for a day or two to see if that help clears up any problems you might be experiencing from the gadolinium.

A lot of information goes through here and that was an awesome observation NHE!!

Catfreak, I figured half way through the day, if the vertigo was still there, then beer couldn't hurt! :D So I proceeded to the beer store and grabbed an 18 pak! Got 2 left!

I like beer, it makes me a jolly good feller!

You guys are correct, I have been starving, my body of much needed water. So much so that they couldnt get a vein to inject the contrast. So, all three MRI's were without contrast. They stuck me four times trying to find a vien, no go.
Good thing is that I go to the neuro tomorrow.
BTW, anyone got a beer? 8O

Hey Bubba

Had my MRI Friday. No dye, head & spine shots. Coincidentaly, I have been wobbling, stumbling around, but I could feel it comming on Friday AM, so I don't believe it has to do with the MRI. If I hadn't felt anything till Saturday I'd wonder.

Went out fishing Saturday afternoon, caught two 5 lb Lake tout (for the smoker) and tipped a few cold ones. I was wobbly before the beers, honest!

Cheers!

Ah... It was just a thought anyway. I try to simplify things, and that sounded reasonable to me :(

However, after the neuro visit, we figured out the problem.....
I was having a relapse the first time, thus the MRI.
This second time, I had run out of my xanax, and had not had any for four days. I take 1mg at bedtime every night. Well, I forgot to refill my meds, and the extreme dizziness and fatigue was a result of withdrawls! 8O
So, I refilled them the same day, took one before bed and BAM, I was fine the next day!
I didnt realize that stuff at 1mg was so potent!
